Heh. What a great name for an all-male porn star psychedelia band.

On a different tangent, considering how foul our sewer system smells (especially on a warm day) a methane explosion would not be completely outside the realm of possibility.

I EAT TAPES is not an asshat. I EAT TAPES is simply responding as any good American - conditioned by the Bush administration - is expected to respond. There are terrorists EVERYWHERE, they HATE FREEDOM, San Francisco is a relatively free city (well, at least according to American standards) and a not unlikely place where FREEDOM HATING ISLAMOFASCISTS would want to attack America.

In other words, I EAT TAPES' response was pretty rational.

That it could just be a gas line explosion is what the LIBURLS would want you to believe. They still don't believe America is fighting a WAR FOR FREEDOM.

/sarcasm (it case it wasn't obvious)

All south bound highways are nothing but piled up cars and scenes of panic as people are trying to escape the methane wave that left SF earlier today. At this time you have three options:

1- Fight like a man: drop down your knees pray and you shall receive government assistance.
2- Huddle under your desk, assume foetal position and sob incontrollably, you'll be shot on sight when discovered by the rescue teams
3- Start looting the neighborhood.

I'll be looting the nearby pub.

Oh, the humanity...

So the question is, who invested large chunks of money into companies that make windows and manhole covers this morning?

Here in New Orleans, about six or seven years ago, there was an epidemic of French Quarter manhole covers bursting into the air. No one was ever hurt (which was a miracle as it was the middle of tourist season).

Apparently all these old transformers started failing and exploding right around the same time. It surprised no one. Everything's falling apart here.

Not exactly an enlightening comment, I realize. But this SF thing reminded me of that... I was carefully walking around manholes for about a year there.

DevilsAdvocate: You care 30 more times than I do. That period was for MetaFilter.

This post sucks. One link newsfilters are bad enough, but there's knee-jerk fear and loathing all over this one. I first saw it and thought "OMFG TERROR" and/or "Oh, crap, here we go again." For about one whole second. Then I very briefly thought "earthquake" with some other part of my brain. Then I read "Just happened. Could be a gas line - at this point, no one knows" and suddenly I was annoyed. Thankfully I EAT TAPES made me laugh, so my annoyance lasted a whole 3 seconds.

It's like someone screaming "FIRE!" in a crowded theater just because someone had a vague passing thought about lighting a cigarette.

"It breaks the guidelines" isn't a strong enough flag. These kinds of infrastructure accidents happen all the time all over the world. People should really wait and let the story develop before breathlessly posting breaking local news, if at all.

echolalia67: Geeze, even when I try to redeem my hasty & much-critcized post with a bit of goofy humor, you people continue to snark. What the hell?

It would probably help greatly if you didn't even try to defend or redeem this post. Not as in "try and feel my pain" - that's an attempt at an excuse and a refusal to admit fault. It's blame shifting. Put aside your ego and try "You're right, I fucked up. This post sucks. It's not worthy of MetaFilter and doesn't belong on the front page. I panicked. I'm sorry." It's really not that painful.

Y'know, you can email mathowie or jessamyn and ask them to just delete it. I've had to do that. Honest, it doesn't really hurt.

But now that the thread is populated with comments and snarkiness, it's probably too late for that.
