The explosion also dislodged a manhole cover and buckled a section of sidewalk. There is broken glass and debris strewn on the sidewalk.

Was PG&E told "pull it" just before the explosion? It's quite obvious that an explosion of this size could only be an inside job. After all, some blog reported that an anonymous official at the Kazakhstan embassy was given a tip that "something big" was going to happen in SF today.

there was something similar that happened in Seattle awhile back, something to do with naturally occuring gases or something similar accumulating and then igniting when a short happened. . . hopefully it's the same thing here and not something else.

Yea who has not posted in haste at the thought of a completely fucked commute home this evening, cast the first stone - the explosion occured near an underground station so yes, after "holy fuck", my second reaction was "Oh man, getting home tonight is going to be a bitch". Here in New Orleans, about six or seven years ago, there was an epidemic of French Quarter manhole covers bursting into the air. No one was ever hurt (which was a miracle as it was the middle of tourist season).
Apparently all these old transformers started failing and exploding right around the same time. It surprised no one. Everything's falling apart here.
Not exactly an enlightening comment, I realize. But this SF thing reminded me of that... I was carefully walking around manholes for about a year there.

The BART stations aren't closed. I was on MUNI when it happened and there was a bunch of hullaballoo and sirens and announcements and such as I was coming up out of the Montgomery station about a half-block away a couple minutes after it happened. But things calmed down fairly fast.

This post sucks. One link newsfilters are bad enough, but there's knee-jerk fear and loathing all over this one. I first saw it and thought "OMFG TERROR" and/or "Oh, crap, here we go again." For about one whole second. Then I very briefly thought "earthquake" with some other part of my brain. Then I read "Just happened. Could be a gas line - at this point, no one knows" and suddenly I was annoyed. Thankfully I EAT TAPES made me laugh, so my annoyance lasted a whole 3 seconds.
It's like someone screaming "FIRE!" in a crowded theater just because someone had a vague passing thought about lighting a cigarette.
"It breaks the guidelines" isn't a strong enough flag. These kinds of infrastructure accidents happen all the time all over the world. People should really wait and let the story develop before breathlessly posting breaking local news, if at all.
