Reminds me of the Nancy Sinatra video shown last night by the Washington Psychotronic Film Society, which included several ads for RC Cola featuring the jingle "It's a mad, mad, mad, mad cola. Shake that cola drag, get the cola that's mad."

More of this sort of thing [ISO/IEC 15445:2000]

They just don't write lyrics like that anymore.

Completely aside...friends and I were discussing 'candy breasts' (ie. there's candy lips, there's candy eyebals, why aren't there candy breasts?).

The best name we could come up with was "Silly Cones" ;)

That first link was already highlighted for me when the link came up, as for "more of this sort of thing" Irwin's show is currently playing on my radio.

Finally, I got there first.

Contrary to that second link Gender Bias is back on the air.

No sound card here; so why is this the best of the web?

And what are those weird numbers?
posted by starscream at 12:47 PM on August 24, 2005

starscream, perhaps if Pretty_Generic had included some editorial props for the late, great Ubuweb (from whence the first and third links), you would have been able to discern some of the greatness. Unfortunately, none of that would be indicated by the links as posted. Bleah.

The numbers are the International Organization for Standardization's (ISO) specification numbers for the material in question.

ISO 3166 will show you the two and three alpha (letter) designation for any country in the world as well as the three digit numeric code country designation.

Back to the FPP. Haven't the 365 Day Project and Ubuweb been covered earlier?

(yes)

There should be more songs about minerals. I'd love to hear a catchy ditty about rhodochrosite.

You did actually just say that, didn't you? I'm not making it up or anything?

Please go away on some kind of lengthy spirit-quest before you say anything like that again.

You can still download the images for viewing in another application and flickr has words you can read with lynx. This is IMO a bad format for a post as I've railed against in the past. The weird numbers sucked me in though, thanks for the explanation beelzbubba.

Sadly, I wasn't trying to be snarky... just trying to understand what's going on ;)

OK, so Mitheral and starscream appear to be complaining that I didn't provide enough material for people without soundcards. Why this didn't occur to me during the 6 long years I spent preparing this post, I have no idea. beelzbubba appears to be managing the remarkable task of complaining that I didn't link to ubu.com, while simultaneously pointing out that if I had it would be a double-post. And in general of late, everyone's been complaining that some people don't post the complete Google search results for the subject matter of their posts.

I truly, truly do not give a fuck. This isn't a school textbook you have to memorise. It's HyperText. It's magic! If something doesn't apply to you, or doesn't interest you, unless you have a really justifiable reason to be offended, leave it alone. Don't shit in it. If you'd like a link to appear on the page, post it. Don't complain about it. Collaborate. Innovate. Table the label and be your own brand. Be somebody.

Or be somebody's fool.

ok, starscream is forgiven

Well, sound files sometimes contain metadata which, along with weird numbers, can be easily plugged into a search engine, which may yield human parsable results. In addition, one can sometimes glean useful information about sound files by merely opening them in an audio editor and looking at the peaks and spectrum information. Failing all that, when the computer one happens to be on, such as ones work computer, does not have some more or less standard parts installed, one can usually bookmark the information in some way, for later perusal on a more up-to-date rig, such as ones home computer.

I'm reminded of the time I played the song contained in the last link for my boss when I was working at GE. Being the financially-minded guy that he is, he just shook his head in disbelief and said, "Shit, I wonder how much money they blew on that."

Perhaps, P_G, I was not direct enough. I did not imply that you should link to Ubuweb. I state now as I did then that you DID link to Ubuweb and that this IS a doublepost.

And I agree that since it took you six years to come up with a FPP, this is a particularly weak effort.

If something doesn't apply to you, or doesn't interest you, unless you have a really justifiable reason to be offended, leave it alone.

How in the world would we know? We click, and we find, Oh Yeah, the 365Project and Ubuweb have been posted about 8 times recently. Boooooring.

I know, flag it and move on. Would have, too, except for your using my name and misinterpreting my aim.
