The A.V. Club posts about the upcoming Death Cab for Cutie CD titled Plans : It takes a measure of bravery—and a bucketload of self-assuredness—to dive headfirst into the big(ger) time with an album full of mid-tempo, mostly gentle songs about death and longing, even if your band is called Death Cab For Cutie

Yes, yes, but what about New Orleans?

Did you just post a link to a record review on The Onion?

Rothko writes "/sharpens pitchfork"

They didn't like it so much....

Eh, poor editing on my part. I'm a total slacker!

I hear that even Fiona Apple was impressed, and nothing much impresses her.

Well they do have their own website now.

Let's wait to hear the CD before we comment, OK?

Oh. I thought we were just posting random reviews of shit.

By the way a)DCFC doesn't qualify as indie anymore, not since they left Barsuk and b) the album isn't "upcoming," it came out Tuesday.

Single link to a review of a boring album by a mediocre band? What the fuck?

That night Cutie called a cab.
Baby, don't do it
She left her East Side room so drab.
Baby, don't do it
She went out alone in town
Knowing it would make her lover frown.
Death cab for Cutie
Death cab for Cutie
Someone's going to make you pay your fare.

The cab was racing through the night.
Baby, don't do it
His eyes, they were keeping Cutie in sight.
Baby, don't do it
When he saw Cutie it gave him a thrill
Don't you know that baby cabs can kill?
Death cab for Cutie
Death cab for Cutie
Someone's going to make you pay your fare.

Cutie, don't you play with fate.
Don't you leave your love alone.
If you go out on this date
His heart will turn to stone.
Bad girl Cutie, what have you done?
Baby, don't do it
Slipping, sliding down on Highway 31.
Baby, don't do it
The traffic lights change from green to red.
They tried to stop but they both wound up dead.
Death cab for Cutie
Death cab for Cutie
Someone's going to make you pay your fare.
Someone's going to make you pay your fare.
Someone's going to make you pay your fare
Someone's going to make you pay your fare.

You are lucky there was that Playstation 3 post the other day, thus protecting this one from shittiest FPP of the week. By a hair.

I found The Postal Service before hearing DCFC and I think The Postal Service is better by far (I almost went insane listening to the Iron & Wine mix of Such Great Heights on repeat for a week straight). I really, really like DCFC's The Photo Album. I'm not as impressed the the rest of their catalog. Plans was a disappointment.

I agree. I'd heard of DCFC previously but they never really caught my attention.
posted by rachsumat at 1:54 PM on September 2, 2005

It's overproduced for sure, but I've been grooving on a few of the saccharine-y melodies. Of course I'm a sucker for a good hook.

Agreed the Postal Service stuff is better (though I liked We Have The Facts...)

(sorry - just wanted to post something utterly banal and non-Katrina related)

I assume you meant the Iron and Wine cover? Although it might be interesting to hear Sam Beam remix The Postal Service.

So to try and save this thread from total uselessness, I'll link to the audio and video of Death Cab and The Decemberists playing Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way" at You Ain't No Picasso. Probably not worthwhile if you're not a fan of any of the three bands, but quite neat if you are.

I too thought that the title of the album was Plans : It takes a measure of bravery—and a bucketload of self-assuredness—to dive headfirst into the big(ger) time with an album full of mid-tempo, mostly gentle songs about death and longing, even if your band is called Death Cab For Cutie. Damnit, that would have been awesome, and the thread would have been worth it to find out that. Pity.
posted by livii at 6:12 PM on September 2, 2005

Well, I'll pretend that's the real title, and that some marketing manager at the label hacked it off after the colon to avoid potentially alienating people who prefer their plural nouns a la carte.

Doesn't that make you feel better?
posted by Joybooth at 9:22 PM on September 2, 2005

I'm not hugely into The Postal Service, but I always thought it was odd that the side project is miles better than the "real" band. Though, I must say, I give them some credit from copping their name from a Bonzos song. Cause I do love me some Bonzos.
posted by Rev. Syung Myung Me at 9:47 PM on September 2, 2005

You love the Bonzos, hey? Even though they have a relaxed Adolf Hitler on vibes? But I guess they make up for that by having the Count Basie Orchestra on the triangle. *ding*

Well, if you want goofy names, there's always the new Coheed & Cambria:

"Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness"

I've sat through two albums of theirs and I STILL can't decide if I like the band. They are good, yes, but I don't know if I like them.

Same for DCFC, actually. Although I DID like the Postal Service.

I find this post a pleasant respite from the 'Bush is shit because of something to do with New Orleans' and 'Fundamentalist Christians are shit because of something to do with New Orleans'.

No, wait, I don't. It's shit too.
