Katrina Freedom E-mail

After dealing with Hurricane Ivan, I can relate to this. Harsh but makes you think. I recieved this E-mail today: Welcome to the land of the free. Free to come and go as you please. Free to board up windows, free to ignore weather warnings, free to stand on the side of the road out of town with your thumb out begging for a ride, free to take your gasless car to a gas station and beg for gas, free to wait for someone else to come save your ass, free to sit on that ass and pray to god for help. What ever happened to “GOD helps those who help themselves"?Here again, in times of strife, the question on everyone's mind becomes: "Who is to blame?" Well, I know the answer.... I blame NOAA for not calling you personally to tell you a HUGE hurricane is coming to your house and to leave the area.I blame the Red Cross for not setting up a five star resort outside the predicted hurricane path 3 days before it hit and for not shuttling you there on a charter bus.I blame the mayor for not sending a limo to pick up your poor ass to get you out of town. I blame your mother for not smacking you upside the head more often as a child to knock more sense into you, and you for not smacking your stubborn mother when she said she wanted to stay.I believe it's President [insert whomever you like here: Bush, Clinton, Reagan, Lincoln, Washington... whatever.]'s fault for making you live below sea level in a geographic region prone to hurricanes. It's his fault you are poor, have 5 kids and no spouse, car, gas, food, water, scuba gear or gold chains around your neck. It's his fault your welfare check can't afford you an Escalade (or in this case a Zodiac with a 15HP Johnson outboard to get your soaking wet ass off your tin roof). At least the numbskulls in the tornado belt have the common sense to build tornado proof basements to hide in. Oh wait... trailer parks. Never mind. The people of this nation are becoming weaker and weaker. Always looking for someone else to blame for his or her own predicament. It is always someone else's fault. I'm tired of people using socio-economic or "poor" as an excuse. "I can't feed my family 'cause I'm poor. I can't get a job 'cause I'm poor. I can't get an education 'cause I'm poor. I can't [whatever] 'cause I'm poor."I grew up poor and busted my ass to not be poor. This country gave me the freedom to do just that. I know that 99% of poor people are poor because they are just plain lazy. "Poor" is a choice, not an excuse. What has happened to this area and the people in it is a tragedy. We as a country should do what is reasonable to help them. But before you go placing blame and pointing fingers at anyone else, point the finger at yourself (especially those of you waist deep in water) and ask yourself if you personally did everything you could to prevent it.

"God helps those who help themselves" is a Ben Franklinism that is pretty fairly at odds with the actual teachings of the Bible (NT, at least). I've always seen it as a cynical dig against religion in general, hardly a guiding moral principle.

Oh, and WTF?

Addressing New Orleans in particular, the city is a product of generational poverty for christs sake. I won't get into the countless studies that show children end up doing more or less as well economically as their parents do, but don't criticize poor people just because you aren't.

I live on the Alabama/ Florida line on the coast and when hurricane Ivan was predicted to make landfall here I took my family and got out. Matter of fact, I took every penny I had to my name and GOT OUT. We could have sat here like the 12 folks down the road in Grande Lagoon and been swept away but we GOT OUT. We are pretty "poor" but I have a Dell and a thumb and if push came to shove I would have used either one to find a way out. We live week to week. I was out of work for 9 months in a toursist based economy area because of that hurricane. I understand the impact of the physical and psycological effects the storms carry.

I'm not quite sure what your post means except as a dump on the front page. Most people are already aware that your country has an extremely large number of mean, bigotted, vocal arsehats. And I might even have given the dear Princess the benefit of the doubt had she not popped up to defend this piece of crap with a bonus helping of self-righteous blather.

I'm sure this'll be deleted, but it should be preserved somewhere for posterity so it can be referred to whenever someone tries to hang the "Worst. Post. Ever." tag on a garden-variety lousy post.

I do sincerely feel bad for all whose lives have been turned upside down no matter what kind of life they had before Katrina wrecked the world they knew before. Natural disasters are part of this world and we all know that eventually the entire planet is doomed for the inevitable. Look at the dinosaurs that ruled the earth for millions of years before us. Do you think they wanted the life they lived to end? Most likely not. Blaming people and pointing fingers is not the way to cope with such things. Being able to possibly understand such tragedy and help those affected is the best solution in my opinion.

Oh, and just 'cuz it's late and fun to talk about before this whole thread gets deleted: when someone says "being poor is a choice", they rarely consider the timeframe. For instance, thanks to an amazing amount of hard work and struggle, my father rose from his initial state of poverty-at-birth to a lower-middle-class lifestyle -- but it took him almost 30 years to do it.

Then again, I suppose he made it before the hurricane came, so it all worked out.

I crack myself up.

At the same time, after a few days I came to the realization that whatever mistake they had made by not leaving, presuming they could have, was not worth what they were suffering. The punishmen here did not fit the crime, and to have their misery compounded by such an agressive and insulting lack of compassion?

Wow. I'm just startled that so many Americans actually do hate and blame the poor, as I see exactly this sort of screed popping up left and freakin' right.

Would read a whole shitful of text from this poster again.

But before you go placing blame and pointing fingers at anyone else, point the finger at yourself (especially those of you waist deep in water) and ask yourself if you personally did everything you could to prevent it.

You know, when I was waist deep in water, pulling the sick and elderly and little children from their flooded homes, I made sure to point my finger right in their faces and ask them if they personally did everything they could to prevent the hurricane. And you know what? Some of them COULD HAVE done more. Lazy fucking children and...you know...the sick and the poor.

"Harsh but makes you think"

Yeah, it makes me think that average intelligence doesn't mean the same thing it did ten years ago. Christ almighty.

I'm guessing there's a heavy dose of lead in Princess's water.

So, if "poor" was the only reason not to leave - why didn't the hospitals and carecenters evacutae? Hmm?

Didn't the levee fail after the hurricane? After people were returning home?

Wait, nevermind. I'm full of crap. Ignore me.

Thank god this thread is slated for deletion.

Whilst this is a terribly constructed FPP, I am afraid the discussion is also of dubious quality. I am interested in PrincessLara's story and would like to know more of her experiences with the hurricane. If people could refrain from the personal invective there might be a possibility of understanding her point of view. Not that PL has helped her case much so far. If someone could take the time to separate the various strands of 'argument' in the FPP, we might start to properly criticise it. Many may think that the arguments are ignorant and racist, but explanation of why that might be rather than the emotional and profane reaction does not help with the understanding.
PrincessLara - hindsight is a wonderful thing, I hope you are relieved at your relative good luck and spare a thought for those less lucky than you. You must understand that some of the contents of the email are very difficult to take seriously, which throws the whole thing into a dubious light. I am left wondering if the FPP and your contributions are not some Swiftian ruse? Are you really as angry and bitter as you sound at other people being less fortunate than you?

PrincessLara quotes posted "I know that 99% of poor people are poor because they are just plain lazy"

This, for instance, is a statement that could do with some back up links if you don't want attract ire and insults for posting it. I have yet to meet anyone who can justify this argument, please help me understand it.

Plinko writes "Didn't the levee fail after the hurricane?"

Yes it did, you are not full of crap.

Also, I think the formatting is ignored by the FPP form, which is why the screed appeared as a continuous flow.

at least craigslist was good enough to get rid of that crap.

PrincessLara:
I've BEEN there. I had $12,000 worth of damage to my home that my insurance didn't want to cover that we are STILL trying to restore.

Oh jeez. I was going to stay out of the pile-on, but this just takes the cake. Are you fucking kidding me?

You're screaming about insurance?

That you would even think to parade your insurance woes as a sign of poverty shows just how little you really know about being poor. Poor people can only wish they had the luxury of being able to worry about things like insurance.

Walk, you say? In four days?

Let's say I have a infant who takes formula. So I've got to carry her formula, clean water, bottles, not to mention her diapers.

Let's say I also have a three year old, or even a five year old - how much do you think a child could walk in four days?

We're going to need to eat, drink, etc. We are poor, we have no money, so we have to carry what we have in the house.

No, I don't think we are going very far, princess.

Nice that you got to stay in a hotel, cramped room or not. But methinks you do not know what "poor" means. Poor is not "seven people in one hotel room while I ponder my insurance." Poor means "I have three dollars to my name and my kids need to eat."

You are, Princess - for lack of a better word - a tool. An ignorant one at that.

This posting has been removed by craigslist community.

And maybe if we're lucky it'll say right here "Nothing to see here, move along."

when I think of that guy who couldn't leave quickly because of his overweight wife and no vehicle who watched his wife drift away from him after his arms lost all their strength trying to hold onto her during the flood...

god you're a shitheel, princess. If there's a hell, I sincerely hope you learn to repent this before you die.

Ok. Sanity check, people. Look at her profile. 100 + bashing comments should not be decorum, despite her "violoation of Mefi tradition". Things have changed. Get used to it and don't ream every newbie to show how old school you are. You look like a dick reluctanct to accept reality at this point. Or worse, just social basher trying to exclude a differentiating viewpoint. This is $5 is action and you're just going to have to learn to live with it and be civil.

Well that may be true, but with both live preview and a preview button, it's little excuse to drop a white noise bomb on the populace. New or old to MeFi, arranging text when others are going to be reading it is just basic manners.

Yes, you're right. Everyone is bashing this post solely because of the registration date of the poster. Not because it's ugly, a shitty post, batshit insane and totally fucking hilariously idiotic.

PrincessLara, I am from the FL Gulf Coast as well. I went to college to escape the poverty that is so pervasive down there...and am working up north because there really aren't jobs in NW FL.

I also happen to know that if you are one of the real workers, you think long and hard about evacuating from a hurricane until it is right down on you, because you are afraid of losing your job.

Hurricanes are unpredictable. They "wobble", especially that in that stretch between PC and LA. If you evacuate, and the storm hits someplace up the coast, you are expected to be at work the next day.

Hell, my sister works at a hospital in P'cola and after IVAN a ton of people got fired for not being at work the next day. And that isn't even a tourist job....if you are really dirt poor (like I was)...you struggle with evacuating in the face of one of the last big money-making weekends of the summer. You always wonder if you can make it back in time so that you don't get fired.

So, you ain't poor. You are probably one of the damn managers that would yell at everyone telling them they have to be at work if the hurricane misses or they are fired.

You give people from my neck of the woods a bad name. Thank God you are the minority at home.

/puffs cig, downs heineken and says " Oh, Yeah?"

All I'm saying is get used to it. This will rapidly become the new norm around here. Lurking is no longer enfornced. You can buy the right to post now. This will become more and more common going forward. That's all I'm saying. Don't rip the guts out of the first lambs. There will be more.

The point I'm trying to make is that you need to get used to these shitty posts real quick, because there are quite many more in store for all of us.

Mefi: We're commercial now!

Ok...I'll have my mental breakdown with you guys. I do love you all that much. Don't you understand most Americans actually think this way? This shitty FPP is "consensus" reality. It scare's the hell out of me, but there it is. Transmitting from a Red State....

Some one send me an email when we figure out how to defeat the irrational, religious moral dictum of Calvinism and the glorification of wealth. Politics have made me mentally ill. Just to be shallow and trite, I'll quote Bill Hicks: "We're a virus with shoes."

Anyone want to buy some guns?
