I find it extremely interesting that the body shapes look so much more similar when nude than in clothing. It shows how well- or poorly-fitted clothing can drastically alter one's perceived shape.

Very true fire&wings: so many high-rise blue jeans, so many giant belts- and blue jeans with the knees worn out? When was the last time you saw an adult wear jeans with the knees out?

How do you suppose the photographer found 59 women who are all the same height?

Non-white persons in general are conspicuously absent.

And is it me, or is there also a disproportionately high amount of pubic topiary action going on there?

Very cool overall though - and a sad commentary on our absurdly puritanical country that something so lovely and natural should be "NSFW!!!!!"

I was being sarcastic!; all of these bodies are very realistic and most would be considered highly flawed by modern (false, howard stern show, E hollywood, US magazine, etc) standards.

This has been around for a number of years, and I believe perhaps even posted here in a different form/site. They were college students billed as average women or something. I think they are above average, and for the reason of who would be comfortable participating in this. More interesting would be what would they look like now, years later. What would any of us look like in college and then ten or more years later?

These pictures really reminded me of a great coffee table book I once saw and subsequently bought for a gift: Naked New York. It features a series of New Yorkers of all ages, races and sizes, first clothed, then naked. It's quite the conversation starter, and is part of a series featuring people from Los Angeles and London.

Decani: Couldn't disagree more, and that "preference" is from long before teh intarweb. In fact, the porn I grew up with the women all had their pubic hair. But, to each their own. Most styles seemed to be well represented except completely shaven.

Hum. I dunno, I found the parade of blank face gals posed like paper dolls a bit creepy to be honest. And true, they are more "average" than your typical airbrushed models, but there really isn't that much variety in body shapes.

Maybe it's just the interface in the main link that rubs me the wrong way. I prefer they way the photo's are presented in Zack_Replica first link, as reference pictures.

Haha! Good one....

You knew I was just highlighting the difference between what different regions of the world consider to be thin....right?
posted by FieldingGoodney at 2:55 AM on October 15, 2005

kosher_jenny - yes the interface is bad, and no there's not much in the variety of body shapes. When I was originally looking for a series of models to draw from, and now too, I find most of these refreshing to reference as they look human, and not generic. Some have a bit more butt or hips going on than the usual Vogue thing... I think that that's why I find them refreshing and 'human', and ultimately more attractive than the starved models that appear in the latest fashion mags. I'm going out on a limb here and saying that there should also be included women who would be concidered "fat" (and, wow are those quotes loaded) by contemporary standards because they make up as large a section of the general population as anyone else and are equally as 'attractive' and 'photogenic'.
Hot girls are HOT, no matter what they look like, and from what I've read there are more than a few MeFites that agree. There needs to be more studies that include these and more, different types in their scope.
IMHO, natch.

A lot of these women aren't the same height and that's what make some of them look a bit gaunt.
posted by atomicmedia at 9:25 AM on October 15, 2005

It's a shame that porn has evidently turned off a lot of women to trimming back a bit. You'd think that with the resulting marathon "face the nation" sessions, it would be a lot more popular.
posted by Scoo at 9:47 AM on October 15, 2005

I think every last one of them is just lovely. :)

As far as the body types and height, there is some photographic trickery going on. The background color and texture makes it somewhat more difficult to see the real outlines of the bodies; if the bg was black or white you'd notice the variation in shape a lot more. That said, it's true that there are no obese women.

Height-wise, the images are just scaled so all the women are the same height relative to each other, again a conscious artistic choice, it artificially reduces the perceived variations. You can tell their height differs by looking at the size of their heads relative to the bodies, and get a better idea of the true variation, which is probably as much as 8 inches, the normal range for women, most of whom are between 5' and 5' 8".

A couple years ago I took a week's vacation at a partly-nudist resort on a tropical island, and I said what the hell and stayed on the nude side. Everyone was naked, and after about 10 minutes I realized that I thought everyone looked natural and comfortable and attractive, even the people with what today are considered unattractive bodies. After that experience I just think pretty much everyone looks better naked, and as evidenced in this piece the variations just don't make anywhere near as much difference sans clothing.

This guy's name is French or something close to it; perhaps the reason for the relative non-diversity is because of where he was recruiting the women? I don't really know the history of this work so I'm just asking. Some places are just not as diverse as NY, LA, Paris, etc. At my job we use (among others) a web resource for nude body photos, both men and women, for building 3D characters; the site is based in the Czech Republic, and pretty much every model is not only Caucasian, but also Slavic or Nordic.
posted by zoogleplex at 11:28 AM on October 15, 2005

Ah, I see. The Flash artist took all these from Akira Gomi's pix. So the non-diversity is by choice.

Weird, I noticed the same thing. Some women who were happily smiling in their clothed shots were blank-faced when nude. I didn't notice the reverse, though.

Yeah, not me. Some people look better with clothes on; some off. The inability to guess which is which is interesting. Were I still a teen, I would consider this flash piece necessary training!

Agreed on both points. Although I do agree with Elaine Benes - all women have beautiful bodies. Men's bodies are more utilitarian, like a jeep.
