Free .be domain names

Belgian authorities allow free registration of .be domain names in a temporary promotion. Hilarity ensues. (apparently metafilter.be is still available)

A russian (.ru) site, that can't seem to respond well, registering .be domains (well, sort of, maybe, but maybe not)...

I need this why?

whomightyou.be was still available, but if I have to give my real information... I don't know. Can I anonymize the whois lookup?

I went to get my family name (being a Belge family) only to find it was taken a couple days ago...dns.be showed that my cousin snagged it, so it stays in the family!! Yay!!

glo.be was the one I wanted, but it's been taken. Alas.

Yeah, I'm not exactly planning on giving all my personal info to the Russian mafia Where is the official site for this? The Belgians rather stupidly sold nic.be to someone, there actual site seems to be here, and there is no news item about this promotion.

Once an affiliate registers with Tucows to register domain names, the marginal price is quite low, I think it's like a quarter or something crazy like that (but you have to pay quite a bit to start selling domains). It's a great deal for hosting companies, etc. As you can see here tucows is licensed to resell .be domains. But does tucows even know about this Russian site? They might, or they might not.

This company might legitimately just want to wait a year and then start charging you for your domain, or they may be after personal info. Either way, they seem to be lying.

Um, does this look like a spammer to you? There's no doubt in my mind that this is genuine.

Gandi.net, which has been mentioned here on metafilter as a good registrar is an offical licensee of dns.be (see here.

Right now they are selling .be at a price of six euros, rather then 12. Why?
From the 1st November 2005 to the 31 January 2006, DNS.BE (the registry in charge of .BE) has decreased the price to register a .BE domain name by €6. Gandi, an accredited registrar, has decided to participate in this promotion and has likewise decreased its own price from €12 to €6 during this period. Note that you can register as many domains as you want and that this promotion does not apply to .BE domain name renewals.
So what is dns.be's regular price?

Y'all know that you've just got one year of registration, and you'll be paying next year if you want to keep it, right? That is, if the .be registrar doesn't take it away anyhow.

Hmm, that is wierd. I've definitely got it - it's serving right now, though not on the standard port. But I've noticed that gandi.net will lock all your domains except they won't do it for .be . I have no idea what thats about, but I guess it could be taken away from me.
