A modern shaggy dog is one that tells an entertaining tale in its own right, and which ends in a ripping pun as the punchline

No. A shaggy dog story does not end in a pun. It ends as lamely as possible.

Yeah, I second that, kenko. The classic shaggy dog story is essentially an anti-joke. Huuuge build up with no little or no payoff.

skip lengthy intro...

Intentionally ironic instructions for missing the whole point of a truly shaggy dog?

I'll agree that these are not shaggy dog stories. A random click on the site brought me to this one, which is about as far from a shaggy dog story as you can get:
The topic of coffee jokes came up in the P.U.N.Y. (Punsters United Nearly Yearly) group to which I suscribe. I could only think of young, bovine vampires.

How does this relate to coffee, do ye ask?

Calf fiend, of course.</blockquote

How embarrassing. Live-preview must have supplied the closing bracket on its own initiative

Whether or not these constitute shaggy dog stories, the self-deprecation in the title wins you a bonus point.

This bonus point can then be used to trade in for two tokens. Now these are no ordinary tokens. In fact, our poster traveled long and far to find a wise old man at the top of a remote mountain who would swap them for six stamps. These stamps bore an ancient Sinhala inscription, which our posted spent years decoding. The inscription led him to an ancient temple, deep in the jungle primordial. Well, not quite primordial, but you get the drift. Inside this temple the priests exchanged the stamps for a certificate of appreciation. It read "you are no longer a fuckwit."

A classic shaggy-dog tale...the clown joke.

Now, that's a shaggy dog story, Linus. No stupid pun, just incredible letdown after the buildup.

I love this site! Postroad, you are my once upon a fuckwit hero!

Those punchlines are like the creationist view of the universe. I read them FIRST and wonder how it is I could get there.

examples:

"We come to ferry Caeser not to graze him"

"It's a nick-nack Patty Black, give the frog a loan."

mwahahahahahahaha hahaha
