It's really a joke

Approval ratings for Bush are at all-time high! This has got to be the most misleading headline ever, but not for the reason you probably think of at first.

I thought it was funny - the link is a sprts section article about Reggie Bush. I don't even know who that it. But the article shure had Google News confused.

Bush receiving significant attention due to his evasive dodging of those who try to pin him down.

Bush not likely to finish college

This is fun

"Guys like Bush are fun to evaluate because you can't stop writing good things,' Shonka said. "Some guys, you have to search and find things to write about. Bush fills up your notepad with everything he does.'

Oh wait, I get it! It's funny because there is a football player named Reggie Bush which is the same last name as President Bush. So when they call the football player Bush, sometimes its funny to think they are talking about the President. Totally postworthy and funny to the max!

Check out this lady with a name that you can do funny things with too!

I smell a Rovean plot. These people will clearly stop at nothing, to the point of breeding test-tube athletes with the last names of top GOP officials to create just this kind of confusion on robot news sites. Project "Jerry Rice" cost them billions and didn't work out so well in the end, but they're learning.

The misleading nature of the headline is deliberate, just a little sportswriter humor.

I love looking at college FB stats for the outrageous numbers you never see in NFL games. Bush: 554 rushing yards in his last 2 games? Young: 267 rushing yards and 2 TDs -- as a quarterback? Amazing.

Chill, Winston! They're not even making fun of him. It is a comical headline. Har. Har. Har. Other than referencing a political figure and tangentially relating to political events, this is not a political post. Calm down, man, it's not like these posts are written with the blood of children.

P.S. The Young stat I cited is for a single game; otherwise not very impressive. OK, carry on everyone.
posted by brain_drain at 8:25 AM on December 9, 2005

Lighten up, dios.

brain_drain: I don't think Bush and Young are good bases for comparison, they're both practically superhuman. No one else comes close to them.
posted by TunnelArmr at 8:25 AM on December 9, 2005

TunnelArmr: true enough -- my point is just that college numbers are inflated overall, for the stars and non-stars alike. Look at the average yards per carry for the top 10 college RBs -- much, much higher than for the top 10 NFL RBs. Bush and Young won't put up these stats once they enter the NFL.

Let's note that both of the Bushes "leave people shaking their heads." In that, America, we can find common ground and perhaps even sing Kumbaya together.

Perhaps I should have a funny names master post. I could have included the aforementioned Mme. Horney and University of Toronto academic Gay Pron. The link isn't at U of T as I believe they pulled it after getting a few too many referrers from Google.

Reggie Bush is friggin amazing and Leinart-led USC has played with the kind of tenacity and sportsmanship that does a credit to the whole team. If they win the championship again, it will be well deserved. The ND v. USC game earlier this year was one of the best I've seen, despite my disappointment in the outcome. Bravo to 'em, I say.

My favorite headlines:

Ex-president's aide alleges sodomy by Banana

Banana sentenced for gay assault

As for Bush. That game against Fresno State was ridiculous. It was sort of numbing. I don't think he got dropped for anything less than 10 yards. I've been watching football for a couple years now and I don't remember a player quite like him (or Vince Young for that matter). Their dominance is just silly.

It's NOT really funny, but it's just as front-page-post-worthy as any political news article. Sports and politics are equally useless, n'est pas? Reggie Bush is a pleasure to watch, and the deliberately misleading headline is amusing.
