Think of this broken link the next time you post an FPP on MetaFilter.

Nor for me. "www.courts.gov.bc.ca could not be found."

broke...maybe the riot is to blame?

is it a bad url or is the site just wanged? if someone can find a functional url that would be helpful. I don't even know how to start looking for it, having no idea what this is about or what other options there are for canadian government sites.

Well, I've learned my lesson. No more mention of pancakes from me.

Link works now, for some reason. Brief summary: inmates in a British Columbian prison complain about the size and quantity of the pancakes provided at their 11 am brunch. More pankakes are ordered, but the complaints remain unsatisfied. Massive prison riot ensues.

The link works fine for me.

Also, "prison pancakes" sounds like euphemistically defecatory, like "meadow muffins."

Is this about the Kent riots? In 2003? Yes! I think so.

Oh. Too late.

Works for me

[15] The riot erupted ostensibly over dissatisfaction about the food. Food issues had been a daily problem. On that day there were complaints over the size and number of the pancakes served at an 11:00 a.m. brunch, some 17 hours after their previous supper meal. One of the guards tried to address the complaints by ordering more pancakes. They were provided in a timely manner. For his efforts he was yelled at and told that the food cart would be held hostage until the inmates’ demands were met.

"Further rioting ensued when it was learnt by the prisoners that a total of aught (0) pancakes had been placed atop the head of any animal on the prison grounds, and that no attempts had been made to accomodate by finding a suitable substitute faux animal."

Also, "euphemistically defecatory" is my new favorite phrase.

Mefites Riot When Denied Sufficient Pancakes.

Gee. What will happen if we put individuals with poor impulse control and a tendancy toward violence in a small space? Pancakes are the least of our problems...

I want a pony, and I'm holding MeTa hostage until my demands are met.

I'm intrigued that pancakes have actually been mentioned 158 times on MeFi. Not bad.

You must be joking. That's for "pancake." In addition, "pankakes" gets 372, and I still suspect that's a huge undercount.
posted by gsteff at 1:38 PM on December 12, 2005

I think you are seriously underestimating the importance of pancakes to MeFi.

I'd have to say this is probably a lot more suited to Chat than to the Blue. Even more so since the pancakes were incidental to their desire to smash stuff up and terrorize some guards.

I stand corrected and somewhat in awe.

Wow, they have brunch in prison? cool.

Probably though, just gets them out of having to provide 3 meals a day.

Whoot! Home town story. The gaol in question has had on going staffing problems and complaints of poor, even hazardous, working conditions. I'm not sure if this is a wide spread problem in the BC corrections system or confined to the KRCC. The local news of course concentrates on the local facility. There were great fears of out of control inmates when they instituted a smoking ban on gaols holding inmates serving less than two years (in BC if you are sentenced to more than two years you go to different facilities than if you are sentenced to less than two years).

The facility is in kind of a weird location. Next to the Trans Canada and Highways 5 and 97 (all the same road) it is on the edge of town next to a fairly ritzy neighbourhood and within walking distance of an elementry school. It also either boarders or nearly boarders the province's largest urban park.

The Pancake Riots of 2003? That was nothing. You should have seen the Waffle Rebellion of 2000. Chaos. Complete Chaos. And the Deviled Egg Disturbance of 1999 was no picnic either, I can tell you. I still bear the scars of the Doughnut Brawl of 1992. The After Dinner Mint Melee of 1988 is a legend around here, but to hear my grandfather tell it that was nothing compared to the Escargot Revolt of 1976. But all of those were like a walk in the park compared to the Cherries Flambe Mutiny of 1952. They had to rebuild almost the entire prison after that one.

How do you screw up pancakes? Now, I can understand the whole situation if they order an eggs benedict and the cook doesn't toast the english muffin (which drives me nuts!).
