Vonity-New kind of Online Community
December 27, 2005 2:57 PM   Subscribe

Online Community Vonity seems to be a new kind of online community which allows members to have their own homepage, post photos, send voice messages and call friends or family over the computer. Members can also call other members for information since everybody is an expert in some area. Also, members can get paid for giving information at their own leisure.

I don't think he's just a Member (OK, I do think he's a Different Kind of "Member"), comments on his Page include things such as:

"Use the "Talk Fountain" to find out more about Vonity. We will regularly post specific tips of how to do certain things, or the explanation on how to use certain feature. Feel free to leave comments with questions and we will answer them in order. It might be easier to also send questions to our email. See "Contact Us", at the bottom of the page."

...which sounds a lot like someone invoved in Building the Linked Site. Now I feel Dirty for having added any traffic to his Page. Let's not visit it anymore to Verify what we Know. Release the Dogs!

Well, it only belongs on the Projects page if you actually made it, because Projects is for things Metafilter members make. So you're kinda screwed either way: either you helped build it, in which case you're really being dishonest, or you didn't, in which case you shouldn't post it to Projects.

The "posting comments on the thing in order to post on the thing" that seems to puzzle some is in reference to having to post a certain number of comments within other peoples' FPPs before being allowed to post a front page post oneself. Dunno if that's actually true for the blue, but I understand on the green that there is a quota of comments that needs to be met before you can ask a question of your own. Presumably, milos is under the impression that some of our...less robust comments are just folks' way of meeting the minimum comment quota in order to get Front Page Post privileges.

Maybe his first name is "Sir", you insensitive clod! Like "Duke" or "Victor". Just like sports teams that wear Red Uniforms tend to win more, it's a Known Statisticological Fact that Metafilter members tend to be more Valued, Highly Capapapable Members of Society - and that people with first names that are correlatives of Powerful Ranks and Positions are too. Therefore, Basic Math *proves* there are a lot of members here with first names that denote Power, Knoweldge, and Repsonsobilititiliy.

Based on research I have done, it appears that Milos is either close friends or an employee of the founders, who I believe are named John, Kyoung Kim, and Jason Lee.

They actually seem to have developed something with maybe some potential (Social Networking plus VOIP plus... other randomness) but need to hire a new online marketer. Or, if Milos isn't being paid for this, they need to get their enthusiastic friend on a shorter leash.

He's clearly close friends or an employee with John, Kyoung, and Jason, so his protestations of not knowing who is involved are lies.

Milos, if you had lurked through the traumapit that is MetaTalk, you'd know that people whose real names are in their usernames are kind of exempt from the "don't use real names" prohibition, with the exception of y2karl, who sees "karl" as an unacceptable shortening of his name, and rothko, who finds using his old name, "alex reynolds", as being an unacceptable use of prior information. Of course, if you want to be a new y2karl or rothko, that's fine, but you need to develop your shtick a bit more before you complain about people shortening your username.

Well, yes. Of course. We hate you. We want you to go play in traffic. The last thing we want is for you to enjoy your time here. In the headier days of MetaFilter we would have posted your address, your bosses email, and the names of your children. But we've gotten wimpy in the last few years, so now we're only allowed to hint at hating you and hoping you piss off and never come back.

The value in MetaFilter is driven by the links. Pond scum like yourself only want to ruin that by promoting your own crap. Thus you hate MetaFilter, and we hate you.
