Lobstermen preserve their bait in it, too.

Maine's favorite drink is Allen's Coffee Brandy and milk. No, really, it is Maine's favorite drink. Let's go get a sombrero, brother!

'And whenever juveniles ask someone to buy them liquor, it seems that brandy is their first choice.'

vodka is much less pretentious

Any thoughts on what liquor goes best with Moxie?

How... timely. (I remember talking about this at the boston meetup last week)

What a great topic. Here is a link to Iowa's favorite drinks--Black Velvet reigns supreme.

I looked for a while and didn't see others. Perhaps others can ferret out this information for us.

Wow, that's some statistical dominance right there.

On the subject of lobstermen, is anyone else really annoyed by the Fedex ad with the supposed Maine accents? Some of the worst I've ever heard. They sound Russian.

I thought it was moxie too.

Thanks, notmtwain. As an Iowan, I still have no clue why people buy Black Velvet or why stores seem to have so much. I'm thinking it has to do with shady distributors and kickbacks since nothing else can explain it...

"Fat ass in a glass"--that is awesome. I must try this beverage.

I grew up in Iowa and the top 10 off of notmtwain's post just makes me shake my head. I wouldn't touch any of them now, but I was familiar with pretty much all of them in high school. We even had a name for #8: Sergeant McCormick. Don't ask me why. It came in a convenient plastic jug with a splash-proof nozzle.

What kind of liquor snob are you? Granted, there's some real swill there, but I'm also seeing Bacardi, Captain Morgan and Smirnoff in the top ten-- maybe not the best of the best, but certainly palatable.

I want these stats for all states. And countries. Most alcohol department Web sites are not so cool.

It's Moxie as far as the Maine statutes are concerned, but clearly the people feel differently.

God, that "coffee flavored brandy" sounds vile.

but I'm also seeing Bacardi, Captain Morgan and Smirnoff in the top ten-- maybe not the best of the best, but certainly palatable.

This is more than palatable:

Cable Car

2 ounces Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum
1 ounce Cointreau
1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice

Wet the rim of a cocktail glass with lemon, then coat with a mixture of cinnamon and sugar.

Combine ingredients with ice and shake for 10-12 seconds. Strain into prepared cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist and a dusting of cinnamon.

(Signature cocktail, Starlite Room, The Drake, San Francisco)

And, jeez, whatever you do, don't try to give them a sombrero made with Kahlua (ka-LOO-er, rhymes with manure, as the locals might say) or they're likely to throw it right at you.

I wouldn't be surprised if this tasted like fermenting ass, knowing the crap that people drink in Maine. (I am looking at you, Moxie!)

From the WaPo article: "It keeps you awake, it keeps you going, it keeps you sexualized," said Connolly, who said he has heard a client explain, "I was drinking Allen's, and then I was in the blackie" -- blacked out.

Liquor in front. Poker in back. Bangor? In an igloo?

out of the top 10 selling liquors in Maine, Allen's Coffee Brandy is 4 of them.

i'd never even heard of the stuff, so this threw me off a bit.

In wisconsin it's also all about the brandy, but brandy brandy old fashioned, not some weird coffee flavoured shit.
