Neat!

So where in China were these taken?

Wow. I thought that the pimped ride from your recent AskMe thread was cool, but these were really great. Thanks.

Guilin is amazing, as those photos show. Love the shots of the fishermen. Cormorant fishing, right?
posted by gemmy at 8:12 PM on January 24, 2006

I can't be totally sure until I look tomorrow, but I think these pics are published in a bargain cookbook that you can pick up at your local Big Box Bookstore for ten bucks or so. it's called Beautiful China, oddly enough. the recipes look good, too.

I don't know how to make circles with MS Paint, so I'm gonna step out for a bit and work on the Venn diagram for these three posts with markers and some printer paper.
posted by carsonb at 8:20 PM on January 24, 2006

Is it just me, or does every one of those pictures focus on China being wet? China has deserts too, right? Aren't they beautiful?
posted by Balisong at 8:21 PM on January 24, 2006

Err..is it me or do the overly worked lands, human rights abuses, Tibetan and Taiwanese oppression and the industrial nightmare of consumptive growth somewhat cloud these very unclouded pictures?

Thanks but the sugars a little too sweet in this photographer's lens..gifted as it maybe.
posted by Mr Bluesky at 8:31 PM on January 24, 2006

Bluesky, what? That's utterly ridiculous. You want a little disclaimer or something in the middle of the photos to make them not quite so beautiful lest people forget some of you don't like China?
posted by thirteenkiller at 8:33 PM on January 24, 2006

Those are beautiful pics, and China's a cesspool of pollution. It's OK, though -- big people can hold contradictory ideas simultaneously in their minds and not explode.

I disagree, Mr Bluesky, I think that these pictures prove that totalitarianist Communism is the only just form of government and that crushing the insulting "resistance" of the Tibetans is essential for our industrial utopia to blossom. All hail Krull, and his glorious new regime!

When did DownThemAll go from a tidy and simple extension to a fucked up piece of crap that can't even properly download 24 images on a simple freakin' web page?! Stupid Firefox... >:(

Photojournalism in China

So what's up with the picture of the mother (?) bathing the kid. Question one: is the kid doing #1 in the tub? Question two: does that woman have a unibreast or something? It just doesn't look anatomically correct. Anyone have suggestions?
posted by reformedjerk at 9:13 PM on January 24, 2006

They just hang low, dude- the left one is hidden behind her left arm/side of the tub.

Maybe I'm stupid..

besides the (decent) pun, what do Venn diagrams have to do with these magnificent photographs?

By The Grace of God, thanks for being the one to ask, I couldn't figure it out either.

Loved the pictures though, thanks.
posted by teleskiving at 2:35 AM on January 25, 2006

pollomacho, it's a long ride from Beijing to Guilin. Get used to coal smoke, dust, and low visibility.
posted by Kirth Gerson at 2:41 AM on January 25, 2006

The first several pictures are from the Longsheng Rice Terraces several hours north of Guilin. I went there several years ago, but couldn't see anything but thick fog. Gosh darn it.

mmmmmmmmmmmm pretty.

While I like them a lot, they really do seem a bit over-colourized.
Looking at the skin of the people, these colours are not true. The photographer/processor needs to learn what the word 'subtle' means.

Thanks for posting them you recalcitrant with the far too bloody long name to be bothered typing fellow who should add something to his profile, you.

Clarification: My comments were more an observation on our photographer's style and content vs. a political statement. These are "calendar" shots, tinted and staged, and don't capture a reality for me.

So please unwad the panties.

Perhaps they have been combined for the sole purpose of making the "of rice and venn" joke in the title?
This is true, which I got, then sourbrew, via mefi@conference.metafilter.com was able to tell me: "mostly someone in channel last night was demanding a venn diagram post" so mystery solved.

So, could someone tell me what kind of geology gives the sort of alien fractal landscape effect perhaps best seen in this one?
posted by jammer at 2:12 PM on January 25, 2006

It's called karst topography (although that wikipedia article doesn't mention china at all).
Looks like the Chinese Karst Dynamics Laboratory is based in Guilin, appropriately enough.
posted by thatwhichfalls at 2:23 PM on January 25, 2006

Arrgh - hit post instead of preview.

I meant to add that the different formations you referred to are called fengcong (tower karst) and fenglin (cone karst). See here for more details.

Lovely, but some are a little too tourist-brochure-looking for me.
posted by Redruin at 12:33 PM on January 26, 2006

The terrain is also known as "cockpit karst".
