Insanely stupidly fun. Thanks scottreynen

Fantastic idea and insanely competitive as you see your opponents rise up the table in real time.

Very similar to "Guess-the-Google" - same idea, but the images were pulled from Google's Image Search.

what this lacks is a chat window where you can type "woooo I got 4th place!!!" after every round.

I just won a game. I rule.

I saw you, Mr. Marx!

It keeps loading the same set of images for me. Am I missing something or just too impatient?
posted by raedyn at 3:33 PM on January 25, 2006

I played this last night and it was great. Only complaint is what raedyn alluded to, its tag randomization isn't that great.

If you enjoyed that you may enjoy TagMan, a Flickrized version of Hangman.

Very addictive but...

Is there a reason the images are so small for me?

I won a round too! The fact that the some image sets kept repeating definitely helped.

I see other MeFite names in the "scores" section. Hi scarabic empath buddhainabucket!
posted by raedyn at 3:41 PM on January 25, 2006

Excellent. Just the right combination of everything. My only complaint is that it's irritating to wait after you've guessed correctly, but I realize the live scores depend on that…
posted by Firas at 3:44 PM on January 25, 2006

I got 3rd. Most productive thing I've done all day.
posted by macmac at 3:44 PM on January 25, 2006

Fun, but perhaps there should be fewer images/less time.
posted by Suparnova at 3:47 PM on January 25, 2006

Yay, i won!

It's a little buggy tho. I got the same question twice on the next game and then it didn't record my score for the second one.
posted by empath at 3:54 PM on January 25, 2006

This is so broken sometimes. I was neck and neck with this guy until a repeat tag came up...he got 20 points for it, I got 0. Very frustrating to see someone with 49 points on the third round, you know?

great stuff

I wish I'd thought of that.

And, yeah. I vote for bigger thumbnails. Not all of us are spring chickens. Up the thumbnail size. My router can handle it.

that duplication bug is quite annoying.

might be fun if it counted all my scores.

great potential spoiled by bugs...
posted by ikareru at 4:40 PM on January 25, 2006

would've been top 10 if i'd actually gotten the points when the dupe bug hit me. without that bug, it'd be very addictive.

I don't see any pictures....just google ads.

i made 10th. top ten. i can go to bed now.

I've landed in the top spot twice, only to completely miss on a late word. I'm the Peyton Manning of fastr. (ba-dump-bump)

Fun times, great use of tags, and I just got beat by Miguel :(
posted by falconred at 5:06 PM on January 25, 2006

Top ten! w00t!

And if you're gonna lose to somebody, Portugal's favourite cult author and very occasional MeFite is as good a person to lose to as any.

Am I totally dense? Why can I not figure out the scoring system? Is it the New Math?
posted by tentacle at 5:48 PM on January 25, 2006

Seems intermittent. Sometimes it turns blue when you type the correct word, other times it doesn't and you keep typing new words when you've already guessed correctly. What gives?

I suck at this game... I got to 7th for a moment, but finished at 27th.

Well, I'm bound to get better, 'cause I'm addicted.

Got 3rd one one round... kickass!
posted by anomie at 6:54 PM on January 25, 2006

i won five rounds in a row, decided it was getting tiresome. neat for a few minutes though.
posted by weretable and the undead chairs at 7:32 PM on January 25, 2006

I won without looking at a single image!

(It's hackable)

Someone else figured this out and played a few perfect scoring games with the name "YouAllSuck". I named myself as follows and YAS dropped out after a few rounds of my name showing up on top next to his or hers.

I'm off now, and the cheater has gone away. So go ahead kids, it's safe to play for now.
posted by nonmyopicdave at 8:15 PM on January 25, 2006

Hooray! I saw this on Projects yesterday and had fun, but somewhat diminished because nobody else was there. Just now I played and there were like a hundred other people. Came in fourth, good enough ...

Had fun using name changes to send messages ("cmonwhereiseveryone") ...

tentacle, score = 11 minus NumPicsShownWhenGuessed

This is similar to Peekaboom which is also a TON of fun. Sadly, it's java which I haven't bothered to get to work on my new system yet, so I only get to play it when I think of it on other computers ...
posted by intermod at 9:17 PM on January 25, 2006

Also, regarding complaints about bugs, they're definitely improving it ... it looked different today than even just yesterday (e.g. highlighting of my name in the list). Also, I haven't seen it repeat image sequences (words) like it did a lot yesterday.
posted by intermod at 9:19 PM on January 25, 2006

The hackers have gotten out of hand. 3 or 4 buttheads with scores of 1348973 and so on. Then a new jackass set things up so that once he guessed the word, he'd use it as a new name with the score 1337.

Bah.

Doesn't seem to like Opera much, played fine but wouldn't show my results over on the left. It would show my results with Firefox, but sometimes would hang at the end of the round, when everyone else had clearly gone on to the next round by their scores. Wouldn't even load in Explorer. Crap browsers. Gonna try it on my fucking Treo next.
posted by Jawn at 12:39 AM on January 26, 2006

Yeah, that 1337 person annoys me. On the bright side... I won a game!
posted by brundlefly at 12:44 AM on January 26, 2006

Thanks for all the feedback. A few days ago it was just my girlfriend and I playing, so I thought I'd get a few more beta testers by putting it on mefi projects. Now suddenly it's everywhere.

I am working on improvements, but I have a day job, so...

I also can't figure out the scoring system. Can someone please explain why I pop on the board immediately after answering correclty and then disappear while people with scores lower than mine still show up?
posted by duck at 7:39 AM on January 26, 2006

Dangerously addictive. Good work scottreynen.

Yeah, a little buggy. But fun when it's working right. Right now it seems to be suck in a loop from 37-34 seconds, and then back to 37. I wondered why my score wasn't showing up, but that probably explains it.

I can. The scores refresh every 4 seconds (because constant refreshing would be too slow). In any 4 second interval, other people have scored, so their scores change when it refreshes. Also, you won't always pop on the board immediately; sometimes there will be up to a 3.99~ second lapse between when you score and when it goes on the board.

(And sometimes there's a bug I haven't fixed yet and it won't count at all. And sometimes the server will crash. But other than those issues, that's how it works.)

Scottreynen,

I posted the pic above noting that I had hacked the game. I didn't know the creator of the site was here in the thread, but I'm glad you are so I can give you props for the concept and the execution. I looked over your code, of course, to be able to grab the answer in advance. Nice programming and a great game!
