Very British teeth

Bowie was much better with his old teeth than with his horrible new teeth.

Wow. I guess this was just before the Era of Shaved Eyebrows.

My favorite moment: Bowie playing the "Concerned Ground Control"

Also, other Bowie getting space tail was pretty sweet. You know he'd pull it off.

I was kinda weirded out by the baseball cap... it sort of perches on his head like a bird's nest.

Oh, man! That was.... utterly strange, and how come I'd never heard that version of the song before? Guess it's the original...written when he was what, 20? jesus!

Fantastic. I like that when he's Major Tom, his shirt says 'Major Tom' just in case we were either a) confused by the two Bowies and/or b) in case the arm waving didn't give enough feeling of weightlessness. I, for one, applaud such dramatic clarity.

Wow. I didn't even know there was a different original version.

Bowie was much better with his old teeth than with his horrible new teeth.

True, but the new ones are scary in a way that adds a charmingly evil touch to his smile. Ahem.

And on that subject...

DAVID BOWIE'S TEETH, Or How I Was Stitched Up By RDF Media

It was soon clear that the interviewer didn’t really know much about David Bowie at all, but she explained this away by stating that she was a last-minute replacement for the holidaying Lulu Lory. To my amusement, somewhere in among the questions, Ms Rawcliffe brought up the subject of Bowie’s teeth, asking me when Bowie had had his teeth job. I replied: “In the early Eighties, I think. Why do you want to know about his teeth?” “Oh just… never mind.” And, then, after more chat about David’s career in the Eighties and Nineties, there was another throwaway question about his teeth, something about whether his smoking habit had discoloured them. “I guess it must have done,” I replied, or something to that effect. I did confirm that Bowie was once a heavy smoker, hardly a secret. I also asked, jokingly, why she was so concerned with Bowie’s teeth. It was laughed off. I made it clear that Bowie’s dentistry was not a subject about which I was well informed. Then it was back to more questions about music and his career.

It was all over in an hour and after being assured they would inform me when the programme was going to be aired (which they didn’t) I was on my way home. There was a further exchange of e-mails about the fee, which was slow arriving, during which I made a further joke about the interviewer’s pre-occupation with David’s teeth. It was ignored. Eventually I got paid and that was that.

* * *

Or so I thought.

Last Friday morning my pal Johnny Rogan called me. He’d seen me on TV the night before, he said, talking about David Bowie’s teeth. What? David Bowie’s teeth? You sure? “Yes, on some programme about celebrity make-overs… you were quoted as saying that his heavy smoking had stained his teeth… most of the show was some orthodontist discussing Bowie’s teeth with a board and a stick. They had a giant photograph of David Bowie’s mouth.”

I'd be offended by the racial stereotyping if my teeth weren't worse.

This version was on a really, really early record called -- I think I'm remembering correctly -- Love You 'Till Tuesday. And yeah, he was like 19 or 20 when he recorded it.

Thank you for this. Bowie looks so ordinary here. Really fun watching.

Snakeman needs a new font though.

Some people may be concerned about teeth, but more people are concerned with David Bowie's area.

Bowie is god. That is all.

FYI, to grab a copy of this video for yourself, check your browser cache for a recent 9133 MB file. It's a Flash Video file, type "flv". Plays fine in VLC.

I admire found media sites like youtube, but I do find it annoying how they use annoying tricks like document.write and weird containers to try to obscure their video files.

His old crooked teeth certainly had their charms, but I liked his nice '80s teeth too. The more recent BowieTeeth2000, however, scare me. Also, I think he's had an eyelift, which confuses me.: why does god need an eyelift? He doesn't! He's god! Get with the program, beloved leper messiah!
posted by scody at 12:38 PM on January 26, 2006

Neat. Never heard this version before--I got thrown when the guitar solo didn't come in.

Great video - and great to see that the art of the music video hasn't advanced AT ALL

Did I imagine an ocarina solo in that version?

Cool, I'd not seen this before, but have always like this version.

Artw said 'Bowie was much better with his old teeth than with his horrible new teeth.'

Damn right. Those fangs were hot.

Fuck, yeah.

Fuck, yeah.

Excellent. I can never get enough Bowie. Usually.

As for his teeth, being an entertainer aside, it's a good idea to get crowding like that fixed as it can reallly stress out one's jaw.

That was fucking awesome. thanks.

More recently: Bowie sits in with Arcade Fire covering "Five Years" and their "Wake Up".

You may want to revise that statement after visiting the Church of Areaology.

(don't blame me, kimdog started it!)

Bowie teaming up with Arcade Fire automatically negates my "I can never get enough Bowie" statement.

For as trippy as the song is, I've always found it very sad at the end. But now that I know he just switched off his radio to spend some time with a couple of space hotties, well everything's okay!

The Bowie Teeth, along with his heavy cocaine use are shown at their best/worst in the Cracked Actor documentary.

Nice find, skallas. Just to echo the sentiment once more: Bowie is an intergalactic space-god.

Another rare Bowie moment on youtube: A 17 year old David Bowie (then David Jones) forms an anti-discrimination society for guys with long hair. Good to see he was still good and weird as a kid.

Also, just for the heck of it: Live SNL taping of one of my favorite songs, TVC15. It has Klaus Nomi in it, and Bowie's wearing an outfit that looks suspiciously like a dress. And it's out of synch, making it even weirder.

Thanks for those links dhartung! Five years is such a great song, but I could not help but notice the similarity between that rendition of it, especially the ending crescendo, and Shatner's Mr Tambourine man.

Bowie rules.

Ah those were the days, relaxing so comfortably in my mother's womb as she smoked opium laced hashish. I had learned about space travel long before the earth's air had reached my precious young lungs. I can recall it as if it was yesterday.

Did anyone else think that felt like an iPod commercial or something?

And my Bowie two cents: a friend of mine shared an international flight seated next to him and Iman. She said that they were both very tall, and that David had a really strange, gravely-low laugh that intrigued her. Also he was very polite and charming.

scody: Also, I think he's had an eyelift, which confuses me.: why does god need an eyelift? He doesn't! He's god! Get with the program, beloved leper messiah!

Maybe he needed surgery after his eyeball was nearly impaled by lillipop

Awesome post, skallas - thanks!

That picture of Bowie's eye....that's not real, right?

Right? Right?

This was part of the Love You Till Tuesday movie. I found a video of it at Tower a long time ago.

Thanks for the links, dhartung! I'd been looking for them.

The eye-lollipop story is real.

Excellent version and video, compared to the '72 video..yoiks. I like Bowie's old stuff, pre Man Who Sold The World.

Arcade Fire and Bowie was great also. Love that band. Arcade Fire was my next immediate search.

What, no Starlight Mints? Damn./

kryptondog, I watched SNL the night that Bowie was on with Nomi. It was......bizarre, fantastic, surreal. I had never even heard of Klaus Nomi before then. An amazing duo.
