Fantastic. I like that when he's Major Tom, his shirt says 'Major Tom' just in case we were either a) confused by the two Bowies and/or b) in case the arm waving didn't give enough feeling of weightlessness. I, for one, applaud such dramatic clarity.

It was soon clear that the interviewer didn’t really know much about David Bowie at all, but she explained this away by stating that she was a last-minute replacement for the holidaying Lulu Lory. To my amusement, somewhere in among the questions, Ms Rawcliffe brought up the subject of Bowie’s teeth, asking me when Bowie had had his teeth job. I replied: “In the early Eighties, I think. Why do you want to know about his teeth?” “Oh just… never mind.” And, then, after more chat about David’s career in the Eighties and Nineties, there was another throwaway question about his teeth, something about whether his smoking habit had discoloured them. “I guess it must have done,” I replied, or something to that effect. I did confirm that Bowie was once a heavy smoker, hardly a secret. I also asked, jokingly, why she was so concerned with Bowie’s teeth. It was laughed off. I made it clear that Bowie’s dentistry was not a subject about which I was well informed. Then it was back to more questions about music and his career.
It was all over in an hour and after being assured they would inform me when the programme was going to be aired (which they didn’t) I was on my way home. There was a further exchange of e-mails about the fee, which was slow arriving, during which I made a further joke about the interviewer’s pre-occupation with David’s teeth. It was ignored. Eventually I got paid and that was that.

Last Friday morning my pal Johnny Rogan called me. He’d seen me on TV the night before, he said, talking about David Bowie’s teeth. What? David Bowie’s teeth? You sure? “Yes, on some programme about celebrity make-overs… you were quoted as saying that his heavy smoking had stained his teeth… most of the show was some orthodontist discussing Bowie’s teeth with a board and a stick. They had a giant photograph of David Bowie’s mouth.”

This version was on a really, really early record called -- I think I'm remembering correctly -- Love You 'Till Tuesday. And yeah, he was like 19 or 20 when he recorded it.

I admire found media sites like youtube, but I do find it annoying how they use annoying tricks like document.write and weird containers to try to obscure their video files.

His old crooked teeth certainly had their charms, but I liked his nice '80s teeth too. The more recent BowieTeeth2000, however, scare me. Also, I think he's had an eyelift, which confuses me.: why does god need an eyelift? He doesn't! He's god! Get with the program, beloved leper messiah!

Another rare Bowie moment on youtube: A 17 year old David Bowie (then David Jones) forms an anti-discrimination society for guys with long hair. Good to see he was still good and weird as a kid.
Also, just for the heck of it: Live SNL taping of one of my favorite songs, TVC15. It has Klaus Nomi in it, and Bowie's wearing an outfit that looks suspiciously like a dress. And it's out of synch, making it even weirder.

Thanks for those links dhartung! Five years is such a great song, but I could not help but notice the similarity between that rendition of it, especially the ending crescendo, and Shatner's Mr Tambourine man.

And my Bowie two cents: a friend of mine shared an international flight seated next to him and Iman. She said that they were both very tall, and that David had a really strange, gravely-low laugh that intrigued her. Also he was very polite and charming.

kryptondog, I watched SNL the night that Bowie was on with Nomi. It was......bizarre, fantastic, surreal. I had never even heard of Klaus Nomi before then. An amazing duo.
