The octopi are back and they're pissed -- or, the continuing misadventures of the one-eyed suitor. [mpg here]

Huh, the article makes it sound like a vicious attack, but the video looks pretty mundane, like it was just feeling around the sub and the dude inside freaked out and hit reverse.

I wanted it to come back for another go, it was a pretty halfhearted "attack"

At the Seattle Aquarium they have an octopus who juggles a jar of peanut butter and opens it up as a finale.

Does it count as juggling if it's just one jar?

ha ha hee hee, I just love this, persnickety little scientists getting their panties in a wad because nature got in the way of their very very necessary and all-important pursuit of information. I say, go for it octopus and take a big dump on it next time if you like. I guess they need to bring a better house gift or at least knock before breaking and entering. Sometimes these people need a dose of reality.

Seems more like an MDMA moment rather than an attack.

"Is this ok? Is it? Is it? Is it?"

I *heart* octopuses.

Man 1, Octopus 0

But you know they're plotting...

Hear hear, Bucket. Indeed, all cephalopods have my stamp of approval. Not literally, of course. A stamp of any sort would do untold damage to our boneless brethren from the deep.

Octopuses will get into crab pots (to get the crabs). The sub pictured in the linked news story is pretty small and box-like. I'll bet he was gonna check it out for food.

I did a google search for "crab pot" & octopus. The first link I looked at talks about the Seattle Aquarium octopus who opens jars and their general craftiness in getting food.

When I was a child, my next-door neighbors brought home an octopus (still alive in a cooler) which they found in one of their crab pots. In the backyard they somehow managed to get it out. It quickly attached itself to the piece of plywood they had dumped it on, its arms spread out to get a good grip. They killed the poor thing with an ax and cooked it in some sort of soup or chowder. I didn't eat any.

Octopi? Octopodes.

Octopi and octopuses are acceptable according to Merriam-Webster.
(The Oxford explanation is interesting, nonetheless. Thanks for it.)

Gah!

They were not meant to be!

Indeed, the OED allows all three. My preference is for octopuses, but I posted that more as an interesting aside than out of genuine pedantry.

just noone mention the word 'virii' within earshot of me!

slimepuppy, thank you for starting my morning off with an out-loud laugh. T-Rex is so freakin' hysterical.

brundlefly, those links are great.

Meanwhile...

WELCOME SQUID OVERLORDS.

The cephalopod biomass is now greater than the human biomass. We don't know how many there are or how big they get. We are NOT ready. Play it smart.

And the sequel...

His actions were inappropriate?! It's a fucking octopus! I'd say it's actions were entirely appropriate! What a weird quote.

A bit late, but yeah Skallas that's exactly what I'm saying, way to read my thoughts. Lets take the scientists to court and see how that will go over, and while were at it Cousteau and this Science thugs too! Grrrrrr hissssssss mean ol' science dorks. Why didn't I directly make that connection before? Good grief............sigh
