Ski Jumping - the only Olympic discipline to ban women. [thanks occhiblu]

They should also ban men from this sport. That way no one will annoy me with this bizarre stunt sport.

They still have Olympics?

I always thought it was because half the time women fake getting off.

Best movie about ski-jumping evah.

reflection: that would be resolved by allowing women to compete with men; but it would appear that even when a woman is of a sufficient standard to compete with men, she is not permitted to enter the qualifying competitions.

You see, the jarring landings might make women hysterical.

Ski jumping is far more difficult than anyone who's not tried it knows. It takes alot of preperation and skill to sail on a pair of skis.

I don't know why women would be banned from it. It reads more like they need to get in, not that they are banned.

But you know what, its a fringe sport. Baseball and softball are played by millions of people across the world and neither of those will be in the next Summer Games.

Women ski jumping? What's next, letting them vote?

Yes, they will.

They've been playing baseball and softball for quite a while now.

dsword, sorry, the two sports are being eliminated, haven't been chopped out just yet, I guess. My bad.

"I always thought it was because half the time women fake getting off."

I LOL'ed.

fenriq, really? That's too bad. I'd only heard about them worrying that they'd have to get rid of softball in 2012, because the US is so dominant.
posted by dsword at 11:06 AM on February 11, 2006

The IOC have dropped baseball/softball for 2012, but will vote on the issue again for future games.

23skidoo - when in the past there were no women's competitions in shooting, women were allowed to compete with men. This resulted in Miss Shan Zhan taking gold in skeet at Barcelona.

Ski Jumping - the only Olympic discipline to ban women.

Except they're not banned. As described in the article you linked. The women's ski jumping organisations have not met the (non-gender-specific) criteria for inclusion.

Ski Jumping - the only Olympic discipline to ban women.
Except you say here that there's no women's nordic skiing either.

Maybe you should have written:
Women's Ski Jumping - one of many disciplines that has not yet met the criteria for inclusion in the Olympics.

What about foxy boxing? That's still in, right?

"Actually, they are all jumping, but not all are really jumping. Six or seven of them are really jumping. There are a few really jumping, but a few, in very few nations."

it's enough to make anyone jumpy ... this jumped-up nonsense where you can't tell whether someone's jumping or just pretending to jump ... someone needs to get the jump on this right away and make sure these women are really jumping, because there's nothing worse than a woman who says she's jumping when she's really just faking it ...

at least that's the conclusion i've jumped to

The women's ski jumping organisations have not met the (non-gender-specific) criteria for inclusion.

No, the IFS has chosen not to allow women to attempt to qualify with men, as well as choosing not to give them their own qualification method. In other words, they are banned. If a woman happened to be the best ski-jumper in the world, there would be no means for her to qualify for the Olympics.

There's no women's nordic combined skiing because nordic combined skiing is half ski-jumping. That's why I said "discipline".
posted by Protocols of the Elders of Awesome at 11:28 AM on February 11, 2006

The root of this problem is that the power to make this choice lies with the FIS and the IOC would not take this power away even if they could.

I think you are wrong in saying that ski jump is the only olympic sport to ban women because AFAIK women cannot box in the olympics. And they have a far better case than female ski jumpers too, because the international amateur boxing association AIBA actually requested for women's boxing to be included in 2008, but the IOC declined.

Also somewhat related: Olympic sailing is "segregated" so that women and men partially compete with different boats.

You appear to be right about boxing, which contradicts the article.

In what other sports do they let women compete against men?

Equestrian.

Jumping the shark should be an olympic event.

If they are allowed to ski jump, I expect to be allowed to experience multiple orgasms. Because they look like they're fun.

I'm only familiar with the new, extreme winter Olympic events. The ones invented so America could finally win some medals.

I searched past posts for this, but a quick search doesn't turn anything up... Anyone ever seen this silly work? Ski Jump Pairs!
posted by misozaki at 4:42 PM on February 11, 2006

Yeah, Americans really need that help because we are so bad at the Olympics.

What's that? Third place all time in gold medals for the winter olympics? Don't let it ruin some good America bashing ;)

In the Winter Olympics, either men or women are permitted to enter the Nordic Combined events, as well as the doubles luge. However, no woman has ever competed in these.

I've seen the US Women's team practice this past July in Park City. I guess they're the unofficial US Women's team for now. And yes, they practice in the Summer on synthetic surfaces. They are all about 18-20-something.

It was incredibly cool to stand at the base of the hill and watch them soar for hundreds of feet and land. Apparently the sport tends to encourage unsafe weight loss.

Ski jumping is one of the few Olympic sports you could compete in if you were dead.

Luge is another.

Women Ski Jumping? Wouldn't they just get airborn and start flipping head over heels? I mean the balance is all wrong. Think about it? Its the same reason you don't see mens Synchronized diving, oh wait.. nevermind.

Baseball & softball, RIP. Curling continues to be an olympic event. Yup, that makes sense (to the IOC).

So no women can perform in this event and yet mystically Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards was allowed to compete. Curiouser and curiouser.

On a lighter note Top Gear's Winter Olympics had a rocket powered Mini Cooper which was totally awesome. And by awesome I mean totally sweet.
