Tammy NYP Was the #1 search today on technorati.com. Who or what does it refer to? A girl named Tammy who attends Nan Yang Polytechnic in Singapore, and who's camera phone was stolen by a "a rival cheerleader, jealous of her popularity" who promptly uploaded a 10 minute video of her having sex. Is Tammy the next dog poop girl? The consequences could be a little worse, as the school may kick her out of school, and the average sentence for an 'unnatural sex act' is one year in jail, according to this moralizing (and oddly worded, but grammatically correct) blog entry.

Ah, Paris, perhaps you could give poor Tammy some pointers on spin control? Maybe she can launch her own modeling/acting career as a result. Can you stand the competition?

brundlefly, I don't see a problem with that stance. The girl is a dumbass for a) taping herself having sex, b) using a phone to do it and not making certain the video is removed from the phone and c) not making sure she maintained an iron grip on something so sensitive.

Pick any two of a,b,c and she's still a dumbass.

That being said, I'd get turned on by seeing it. It exists, it's about sex, and she apparently didn't mind being recorded at the time. Those qualities have nothing to do with her getting caught.

For those who don't know why this story has legs, there are three reasons why this is interesting to me:
1) It sheds light on the puritanical legal system of Singapore.
2) It allows for Americans and other nationalities to reflect on the puritanical nature of their own legal systems; even if the laws of other countries don't ban the same acts Singapore bans, many countries do ban concentual acts due to "nastiness."
3) Since it is the number one search term today on Technorati, it allows us to reflect upon the nature of technorati users and internet users as a whole.

"Well jeeze guys you just DON'T keep private videos on a phone!" Fuck you. People make that kind of mistake all the time, and the girl doesn't deserve this planetary level of embarassment, and especially not jail, because some bitch took advantage of that to fuel a petty, childish fued.

In addition to Drexen’s excellent points the lascivious glee with which this is described is completely tasteless (as alluded to in the post title). Not merely lacking in adult sophistication, but indicative of the kind of fixation/fetishization present under sexually repressive systems.

Odd how it is that which disgusts me and not any act itself.

I remember being at a very religious wedding celebration and there being no alcohol served. No dancing either.
I didn’t complain much, just would have been nice to toast traditionally, but hey, not my wedding. Well, some guy, one of the folks from the religious community, had smuggled in some odious kind of schnapps or something and wanted to drink it with those of us who weren’t in the community.
Seemed kind of surprised when no one took him up on it.
Same kinda thing here. Exploitation seems far more common among the repressed types. Hypocrisy as well.
I haven’t downloaded it. Not that I’m not interested. Hey, some good looking young chick having sex - who isn’t turned on by that?
But given the circumstances of it, it bothers my stomach as much as the cheap illicit schnapps would.

Hmm...softcore porn and blacked out depictions of porn bother me as well.

There are plenty of couples who enjoy taping themselves for their own private enjoyment without fear of exposure. I think that you're making the jump from taping to broadcasting way too easily.

It doesn't strike you as odd that you consider videotaped sex on a cellphone an "incredibly private moment"?

Why? Because it's on a cellphone? How is that any different from still photos? Video tapes? This girl's private property was stolen and a private document was broadcast by some evil little bitch. Her privacy was invaded and you guys are blaming the victim? I'm sorry, that just rubs me the wrong way.

By the way, I find it curious that most of the discussion is revolving around the gal. What about the guy? Is he mortified right now? Or bragging?

That's easy to say now it IS all over the net. Most people just don't expect their phone contents to be spread, I'd contend. Who even knows how long the video was on there before it was snatched, or how secure she kept it? And anyway, if she made a mistake in that department, does that really warrant such an extremely invasive, personal and mean-hearted flamefest directed at her? Teenagers are sensitive about their reputations. Hers is in the gutter, in a far deeper sense than if it had been a videotape or polaroids rather than a digital file. Don't try and shift the blame for this pile-on onto her.
posted by Drexen at 5:33 PM on February 20, 2006

If I were to record my sexual escapades (trust me, you don't want it), I would not use a cellphone simply because cellphones get lost or stolen, the data is unencrypted, it could accidently be sent elsewhere, etc. Recording yourself having sex is just fine, but don't store the data in a way that a 'rival cheerleader' can pull this stupidity.

Don't leave it in your IMAP/Gmail/whatever account either. In fact, don't leave it on an internet-connected computer. Do the smart thing and burn it to CD/DVD and put that away in a safe place if you care to not show your private moments to the world.

So yeah, the rival was an asshole for posting the video. The videographer is still a dumbass for recording it and then not taking the precautions necessary to protect it.

I don't get your point. Haven't many of the most advanced minds of the hacking/security game been teenagers. Hell, at least 80% of the people I know over 40 rely on a youngster to help them with their computer problems.

But I guess I just really get annoyed by adults who underestimate the ability of teenagers. It's been approaching a decade since I've been one, but I still remember being talked down to by people constantly underestimating what I was capable of because of my age.

Sure some teenagers are dumb/ignorant but that is because they are dumb/ignorant, not because they are teenagers and being a teenage means you can't understand 'stuff'.
