Sounds like a good companion piece to his movie about AOL.

The actor is attached to star in "How Starbucks Saved My Life," about an advertising executive

Yes.

Van Sant is directing some movie that by its very title shills for a corporation? WTF.

based on a book proposal?

my worst fears are becoming reality.

Let's see there was AOL in 'You've Got Mail', FedEx in 'Survivor' and now Starbucks. My question is, when does he start shilling for KY, Cheetos and Monsanto?

Van Sant hasn't made a worthwhile film since To Die For.

Besides the aforementioned Hanks 90-minute commercials (good joba Vaska!), has there ever been a more egregious case of Product Placement????

Spoiler ahead:

In the end, he stumbles on the price of a triple caramel decaf no-foam soy macchiato, and is able to retire to Barbados with his family.

Why not? He's been surreptitiously shilling for Massengill for a long time now.

Usedwigs: Thanks, and yes, it was called The Wizard. Those who might want to reference The Coca Cola Kid should know it was actually done with Coke's endorsement at all.

The only way this movie would work if it is based on this guy. [youtube. contains f-bombs]

you forgot the Department of Homeland Security in The Terminal.

Vaska, it's a tough call between The Wizard and Mac and Me. I think it tips to Mac for referencing the company name in the title.

I really liked "Gerry".

in a total derail, I just made the connection between Haley in 'The Wizard' and Rilo Kiley. I knew there was a reason I loved that movie aside from SMB3. *swoon*

Team Lowkey: I was doing really well at forgetting that movie ever existed and you've gone and ruined that!

I heard Tom Hanks likes to dress up like a woman so that he can live cheaply in an all female co-op. Pervert.

I really liked "Gerry".

The first 20 minutes of Gerry has a certain audacity. I didn't know that a formerly inspired director could shoot something that boring. I gave up somewhere in the middle of the "Wheel of Fortune" anecdote.
posted by PinkStainlessTail at 4:39 PM on March 29, 2006

I think 'Gerry' was one of the better films put out in the last 5 years. I really feel like it seperates people who like film for what it is, and people who just like it as a means to be told good stories.

And as for whether or not his films are 'worthwhile.' There's a real difference between messing around with form and failing (Elephant), or even playing with classic films and faling (Psycho), and doing a Tom Hanks movie about Starbucks.

I wanted to put some kind of Euphemism for making the worst film ever in there, but I couldn't come up with anything more damning than 'Making a Tom Hanks movie about Starbucks'. That is my new expression for what the devil will do to me after I die.

I really feel like it seperates people who like film for what it is, and people who just like it as a means to be told good stories.

Not me: I'm all for experimental film, film about film, slow film, seemingly directionless film, non-linear narratives, non-narrative, and what have you. Gerry just bored the hell out of me.

Van Sant's last three films (Gerry, Elephant, Last Days) have all been great.

this is inexplicably horrible news, however.

Is this even real? Outside of the Reuters article I can't find anything about it.

Boy, Hanks has come a long way since he was bewildered by the cappucino machine in Saving Private Ryan.

Thinking of that one funny scene in Kevin Smith's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back where they're making Good Will Hunting Two and they ask Van Sant for direction and he's busy counting stacks of money and mutters "Busy...."

and Bachelor Party = Best. Tom. Hanks. Movie. Ever.

The plot's as weak as their coffee.

Figures he would star in something as craptastic as "The Da Vinci Code". Hell, I barfed just typing that title.

Tom Hanks to star in some movie about Starbucks

Before I clicked the link or saw the title, I really, really hoped Tom Hanks was going to play Captain Ahab in some kind of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Stoppardesque film.

you forgot the Department of Homeland Security in The Terminal.

Not to mention every chain store on the planet. Every single shot had a logo in the background.

Sean Penn already did the uplifting Starbucks employee story in "I Am Sam", unless my memory of the trailer is wrong as I haven't seen the film myself.

Oh sure the first season was good, but it really went downhill after that.

Tom did movies too?

You know what the scary thing is? I'm about to face redundancy (after ten years as a web content dude) - and I've fantasised about working somewhere like Starbucks, just to figure out how to re-connect with people who aren't tech/media-obsessed...

My life is going to be a film. and even I don't know how it ends.

Van Sant is a hack - yes, he's made a couple of great films, but he's made more bad ones than good. And the bad are really bad - everyone remember Psycho?
posted by venus in furs at 10:31 AM on March 30, 2006

Ugh. And Elephant? I would rather watch an elephant for 75 minutes ("feature-length") than that crap.
