It's Hard Out Here for a (Ta)Hoe: The smartypants over at GM are running a contest to "make your own" commercial for the gas-guzzling Tahoe SUV. People are giving them just what they deserve. These are likely to be yanked sooooooon, so get 'em while they're hot!

Here's a DKos diary with a ton of great ads inside:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/3/30/163517/994

DKos being DKos, it's probably easy to guess whether you'll like them before clicking on the link. But, if you're inclined to like this sort of thing and the political views you'll find on DKos, this diary is a goldmine.

Someone also put some together in downloadable formats/youtube/GM aint gonna yank it down. There's a link to it somewhere in that diary.

I was rolling on the floor when I found this last night.

How could they not see this coming? Had they never used the internet before?

As graventy alludes to above, I suspect the "suits" knew exactly what was going to happen. MeFi and websites the world over have been duped into a massive viral marketing campaign. Those who view and create the subversive ads weren't going to buy a Tahoe anyway. Meanwhile, the massive surge of publicity gets the word out to people who actually are in the target market.

Now then, how about a nice tall glass of Pepsi Blue?

posted by weapons-grade pandemonium at 9:49 AM on March 31, 2006

I agree with aladfar - they knew full well this would happen and designed the contest accordingly. It doesn't look like you can access people's entries without knowing the URL (so the only people who see the "subversive" entries know what they're getting), plus there's the big disclaimer at the top of the player window.

Sometimes Metafilter sucks.
posted by cillit bang at 9:50 AM on March 31, 2006

I don't think the marketing idea is bad at all. Now I know more about a Tahoe than I did before. It's not a profitable marketing strategy, sure, but that's because the product sucks and the ads are honest. Unfortunately, I expect this will later be used as an excuse to make advertising more dishonest.

All publicity is good publicity, in a sense. Many people purchased "A Million Little Pieces" after the author was outed as a liar. Two appearances on Oprah (even if one of them is you getting your ass handed to you) will do that.

I liked the "Peak Oil" one - it started a bit weak (trying to make a point about walking, when really it should have just concentrated on oil consumption), but the last line hits right.

"Peak Oil is here. Maybe you should walk."

posted by JerseyBear at 10:20 AM on March 31, 2006

The saying 'any publicity is good publicity' is really only applicable if your brand/name recognition is below a certain point in the general population. The idea is that even if you get bad press, if only 40% of the people knew about you before, and 80% hear about you through some bad press, thats 40% more that know about you now. Chances are, a portion of those are going to forget the press but remember the brand. If everyone already has heard of you, bad press is just bad press since everyone already knows about you. Most of Chevy's market has heard of the Tahoe. Reiterating that its a gaz guzzling hunk of over-compensating garbage is not going to help any, viral marketing scheme or no.

Reiterating that its a gaz guzzling hunk of over-compensating garbage is not going to help any, viral marketing scheme or no.

I'm assuming there's a chunk of people who are making sincere and/or funny ones (that don't contain any political stuff) who the competition is really aimed at. The entries that have ended up here are the inevitable side effects of running such a competition, and they've done their best to insulate against it.
posted by cillit bang at 10:35 AM on March 31, 2006

I used to work for the interactive department (may it rest in peace) of the ad agency that handles the GM account in Canada. We wanted to do something very similar to this a number of times with different product launches (usually Pontiac stuff, because of their market focus).

You have no idea of how hard it is to get something like this past the brand managers. They are extremely conservative, because they only hold the position for a few years (GM runs its management like the British military run their officer corps; you get moved from division to division until you reach your Peter Principle end), and they desperately don't want to screw up.

Kudos to Campbell Ewald (the ad agency is the registrant of the domain, which is unusual, GM has a policy of owning everything with their name on it) for getting this through. I'm sure the other agencies in different markets want to know how they did it ;)

posted by jefbla at 12:47 PM on March 31, 2006

The irony is, GM and Chevy are part of a group of car manufacturers that are actually making an effort to be kinder to the environment.

The Tahoe is one of their line of FlexFuel vehicles (they've been out a couple of years now,) that accept E85 ethanol -- a hybrid fuel made of 85% corn-based ethanol and 15% gasoline. FlexFuel vehicles can run on E85 ethanol, gasoline or any blend of both. GM's been running a campaign called "Live Green Go Yellow" which would probably be more successful if it had a little more publicity.

Chevy has said that the 2007 Tahoe gets better gas mileage and produces less air pollution than its predecessors although I'm not aware of any independent tests. Of course, it's still light-years ahead of the Hummer™. :)

I have been compiling a list of these over here at Peak Oil.com but I hadn't made enough comments to post to the main page of metafilter - new it wouldn't be too long before it got on here though. How long before the site gets DDOSed, dya reckon?

Those were great, wendell. And everyone else too.

I felt like I really needed to be agressive and direct. I want my ad to speak to people. I want people to get up out of their chairs and go to their nearest Chevy dealer and buy not one, but 2 Tahoes right this now, dammit! Click here.

No, Mr Bluesky, you are only runner-up for the Gold Ass award since I took your mistake and made it a commercial-length "haw haw".

But nothing I've contributed to this viral pile-on is more stoopid than this one.

One more thing that's wrong with the way Chevy's doing it.

No one said anything about my first one, so I made another one.

OK. Had to try it. I was disappointed that it wouldn't let me post the entire two and a half hours that I created. Maybe on the DVD.

It's amazing to see how willing folks are to join in a viral marketing scheme just to be cool.

It's amazing how predictably HTuttle tries to troll this site.

Why you so upset at people having fun HTuttle? You upset because you didn't get a chance to beat your wife today?

Nice, Fortyseven. How'd you manage to get shortened clips on the "DIE! DIE! DIE!" part?
posted by Galvatron at 9:39 AM on April 1, 2006

Fourtseven's is worth the click, even if you seen a bunch of these.

Momentarily I was feeling sorry the poor office grub Chevy would make watch all of the entries in order to judge them for the contest - then I read the Official rules and realized they can easily toss out whichever entries they want thanks to the wording. Of course, the theory is that someone is still going to have to watch them to tell which ones to toss out...

Darn it. I missed out.

:(

Thanks, guys. :D

The shorter bits were the original length of that particular clip. Or at least that's how it seemed when I linked them together.

I bet it's almost worth the effort to try and extract the clips from the flash (probably .flv files) and doing something up in Vegas...hmm.

I didn't realize how damn funny some of you are.

And wendell, you need to start a humor site.

wendell : "Been there. Done that. Burned out."

I was about to say "Too bad", but your last update was...2 days ago? "Been there, done that." = "There now, doing that"

Compared to my intended volume of humor content, the current output at wendellwit.com may be considered a sign of kidney failure, but thanks for the acknowledgement (and the excuse for another blatant plug).
and, I just updated two minutes after your comment on a totally unrelated subject...
