Clash fan arrested under terror law

"London Calling" sparks terror fear in cab driver. Newsfilter: "British anti-terrorism detectives escorted a man from a plane after a taxi driver had earlier become suspicious when he started singing along to a track by punk band The Clash, police said Wednesday. Detectives halted the London-bound flight at Durham Tees Valley Airport in northern England and Harraj Mann, 24, was taken off. "The taxi driver had become worried on the way to the airport because Mann had been singing along to The Clash's 1979 anthem "London Calling," which features the lyrics "Now war is declared -- and battle come down" while other lines warn of a "meltdown expected." Also reported here, where we learn this is not the first Clash-related terror scare. Joe Strummer is looking down and laughing, not least because it wasn't terror song Spanish Bombs.

Hurm. I always though the '...with boredom now!' was .'..we're mortal now!'. Did I ever mishear that one.

That's pretty awesome that they have cabs where you can plug your mp3 player into the stereo system and force the cabbie to listen to your music. And by "awesome," I mean it's a terrible idea.

This just highlights the need for more Clash education in our schools.

Clash education is a job for parents, not schools. When I think my kids are old enough, I am going to introduce them to my 53 bootleg shows, and then we're going to move on to the last quarter of Sandinista, Rat Patrol From Fort Bragg and Topper's solo album.

But I am not going to tell them about Cut the Crap. They can find out about it for themselves or, fate willing, never hear about it.

Gumbo!

Does anyone really think that's the actual lyric? It sounds for all the world like "gumbo," but I can't figure out how that would make any sense. Is there slang that I'm ignorant of that would make sense? I think this is an unfortunate sound-alike, like "London's burning with porno now," and "I'm the all-night drunk-driving wolf," except that we may never know what was really said in this case.

I'm guided by a signal in the heavens
I'm guided by this birthmark on my skin
I'm guided by the beauty of our weapons
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

Ah you loved me as a loser, but now you're worried that I just might win
You know the way to stop me, but you don't have the discipline
How many nights I prayed for this, to let my work begin
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

Next up, man singing song in taxi by Canadian songwriter Bruce Cockburn triggers pre-emptive invasion of Montreal by the US Marines. Let's roll!

Here come the helicopter -- second time today
Everybody scatters and hopes it goes away
How many kids they've murdered only God can say
If I had a rocket launcher...I'd make somebody pay.

I don't believe in guarded borders and I don't believe in hate
I don't believe in generals or their stinking torture states
And when I talk with the survivors of things too sickening to relate
If I had a rocket launcher...I would retaliate

On the Rio Lacantun one hundred thousand wait
To fall down from starvation -- or some less humane fate.
Cry for Guatemala, with a corpse in every gate
If I had a rocket launcher...I would not hesitate

I want to raise every voice -- at least I've got to try.
Every time I think about it water rises to my eyes.
Situation desperate echoes of the victims cry
If I had a rocket launcher...some sonofabitch would die

Note to NSA readers: I didn't write the song, I just posted it. I don't even sing it in the shower, I promise.

According to Olbermann, he was also singing along to Led Zeppelin "Immigrant Song".

We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!

On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore,
Of how we calmed the tides of war. We are your overlords.

On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.

So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins,
For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing.

The cabbie doesn't recognize the Clash or Zeppelin? Either he was under 30 and stupid, over 60 and a little daft, or needs his British citizenship revoked.

Stay with me. cillit bang said something that might be seen as denegrating The Clash*. I love The Clash, so I wanted to insinuate that cillit bang is a fan of a punk band that one should be embarassed about liking. My first thought was one of those currently popular bands that are sold as Punk by their label and obviously have nothing to do with 1977. But then I thought a second more and decided on Skrewdriver-- it's funnier to call cillit bang a skinhead for disparaging The Clash and the politics of the two bands are in direct opposition. Get it?

I'm not calling cillit bang a nazi skinhead. However, I should point out that I don't have any evidence that he is NOT a neo-nazi Skrewdriver fan either.

*even if I think "punk rock" was a marketing angle from its very inception and don't care whether it's applied to The Clash or not

Sure you don't, Nazi shithead. And you and your buddies in the National Front don't trade Skrewdriver bootlegs at your meetings because you've never heard of the National Front, right?

b) The Clash are not punk

Who is? Nobody is because it's a meaningless term. But if someone gets to decide, it should be Malcolm McLaren because he invented the "movement" to sell clothes. Or maybe Johnny Thunders, who I'm told influenced the birth of the punk scene with his excuses for dressing like an ugly lady.
