Is it a recent breakthrough that diet coke and mentos cause a vinegar and baking soda reaction? A couple weeks ago maybe 10 videos in google video's top 100 were diet coke and mentos.

Did you know that the little girl from the Welch's grape juice commercials died from drinking Diet Coke with Mentos?

How is this even an experiment? Where's the control? What's the dependant variable? They didn't even present a hypothesis, for chrissakes! Somehow I don't think this will pass peer review.

I thought she died after making out with Mikey from the Life Cereal commercials.

She was run over by the woman with the really small car in the Mentos commerical.

It looked like they had rigged something up using the bottlecaps. When the big jets from the side of the screen came up I just assumed they had people off camera doing it, but on a second viewing I noticed them yanking a cord that (I assume) connected to more diet coke bottles. So I guess they worked out some sort of grenade-like system.

An explanation is available on this site. It reads, in part:

"When you drop the Mentos into the soda, the gelatin and gum arabic from the dissolving candy break the surface tension. This disrupts the water mesh, so that it takes less work to expand and form new bubbles. Each Mentos candy has thousands of tiny pits all over the surface. These tiny pits are called nucleation sites - perfect places for carbon dioxide bubbles to form. As soon as the Mentos hit the soda, bubbles form all over the surface of the candy. Couple this with the fact that the Mentos candies are heavy and sink to the bottom of the bottle and you've got a double-whammy. When all this gas is released, it literally pushes all of the liquid up and out of the bottle in an incredible soda blast. You can see a similar effect when cooking potatoes or pasta are lowered into a pot of boiling water. The water will sometimes boil over because organic materials that leach out of the cooking potatoes or pasta disrupt the tight mesh of water molecules at the surface of the water, making it easier for bubbles and foam to form."

I was hoping it was 523 Mentos dropped all at once into a vat of 202 liters of Diet Coke, personally.

i heard the little pepsi girl and the welch's grape juice girl died while practising perverted sexual acts on each other involving mentos anal beads and diet coke enemas, in old-growth parkland. When their chubby little bodies ruptured, spewing toxic aspartame over a 100m diameter, all the grass and flowers burned, and trees there have developed putrid tumorous growths.

I could be wrong about the diameter explosion though.

So, if I read the explanation link provided by sindark correctly, is the concept behind the Mentos/Pepsi reaction the same idea as the Guinness Draught Widget? It seems very similar except for the intensity of the reaction. Cool.

No. The GDW is a capsule of pressurized nitrogen that releases the gas once the can/bottle is opened and the internal pressure of the widget becomes greater than the external pressure on the beer.
