Here we have a young lady (about 27, if her blog is correct, hardly a "kid"). Who puts an offensive remark on her shirt and wears it in public (I can hear the 7 year old in the book store saying "Mommy, what's a boner???") .

The remark could certainly also be embarrasing to Cooper, and certainly drags the whole interaction into the gutter.

Sorry, I stand by the "dumb shit of a female" remark. What part of that did you find incorrect?

Lastly, why do you feel the remark is misogynistic? "Female" was the least offensive term I could come up with. "Lady" didn't fit, "Girl" didn't fit, "Woman" implies more to me than "Cooper gives me a boner"... Any suggestions?

posted by nadawi at 11:06 AM EST on June 16

I know that it is tempting to decide that a post is interesting based on the number of comments that it receives, but that is not always the case. Take, for example, this FPP. It got six comments, but it contains telescopic pictures of the sun. PICTURES OF THE SUN!!! What could possibly be more interesting than that? It is the freaking sun! Six comments.

Yet, this young lady goes to a book signing by a somewhat celebrated journalist wearing an amusing shirt, then blogs about it, and the comments pour in. I am not saying that it is wrong, just that if you were weighing the interest levels of that versus the sun, I think most people would decide that a 4.6 billion year old star with a surface temperature of approximately 5,500 K that makes life on earth possible was a little more interesting than a star-struck blogger. No hate intended. Just saying.

Ah but in terms of snark potential: sun, minimal - goofy blogger, near infinite. Besides, what's more web-related, the sun or blogging?
posted by scheptech at 8:44 AM on June 16, 2006

I don't disagree that the sun is more interesting...what I was trying to point out was that many thought this was at the very least more comment worthy so to say this isn't particularly interesting is on it's face just wrong as now we're at 60 comments and climbing.
posted by nadawi at 8:50 AM on June 16, 2006

There was a recent excerpt from AC's book in Vanity Fair. I thought he came across pretty damn reasonable. Don't hate the guy because he shares air time with people vapid enough to suck the air out of a zeppelin. I've actually never seen his show but I thought he came across pretty damn good in his writing.

And seeing the word boner on a T-shirt these days is actually quaint. Ranks far below the usual Jesus technicolor vomit silkscreens and other pseudo-provocative bullshit that passes for sartorial edginess on the backs of the younger-set.

You know the one thing that I don't understand? Betty Page hair. There's an entire subset of the arts community that has that hair. All of them between the ages of about 25 - 40. You know the one thing that I don't understand? Betty Page hair. There's an entire subset of the arts community that has that hair. All of them between the ages of about 25 - 40.

dejah - It's supposed to be ironic, with hints of feigned innocence and goth culture. The extended pageboy look's often adopted by Gen-Xers who get older, and invariably wind up emulating the Boomer icons of their youth.

So in addition to riffing Bettie Page, the style's also a nod toward other grrrl heroines, including Tura Satana, Malia "Vampira" Nurmi, Carolyn Jones, Yvonne de Carlo, Louise Brooks, Lucy from Peanuts, Exene Crevenka, Lydia Lunch, Kim Deal, Cindy Wilson, Polly Jean Harvey, Elizabeth Montgomery, Dame Diana Rigg, Veronica Cartwright, Julie Newmar, Karen Black, Anne Dudley, Allison Arngrin, Lisa Whelchel, The Shirelles, Barbie's little sister, and the counter girl at Hot Topic.

Wait a sec. This isn't AskMe, it's that damn Cooper thread. CURSES!

Has this website gone downhill lately or something? Been a while since I've been around, but I paid my 5 dolla because it genuinely had cool links, and cool comments.

First of all, the post itself is lame. I don't even know who Cooper is. There's nothing in the post or the link to suggest who he is, or why I should even be interested in researching it on my own. I can't even tell WHY the person posted it. Was it because it's about Cooper (whoever he is!), because of the shirt (who cares?), because of the girl (what about her?). Who knows!

Secondly, I've seen some really shitty comments about the LJ'er. Comments about her look, her hair, her very person for even posting such a thing. Someone got to see someone they admire and made an excited post. Good for them. What the fuck is wrong with you people? Look, it's LJ, it's a place people post stuff for their friends and, secondly, for a community which might have a similar interest. If you are neither, let it be. It's assholes like you that force people to make their LJ's private, thus denying access to other people who might've been interested. Yes, she has the right to be offended. A very well-trafficed and popular site linked her private LJ and in the comments insulted her personally. Jesus.

In The Notorious Betty Page they portray the bang hairstyle as being suggested by a photographer friend of hers to hide her out-of-proportion large forehead. That has always been the purpose of bangs.

Anderson Cooper by Diane Arbus.

The portrait, shot for Harper's Bazaar, is described in Patricia Bosworth's Arbus biography:
"To dispel the growing myth that [Arbus] only took pictures of freaks, she made up a list of elegant people she wanted to photograph...As if to prove her point, she took a remarkable portrait of Gloria Vanderbilt's sleeping baby son, Anderson Hays Cooper, for a Harper's Bazaar Valentine issue. In this truly astonishing picture, the infant resembles a flat white death's head -- eyes sealed shut, mouth pursed and moist with saliva. When Gloria Vanderbilt saw the photograph, she forbade Bazaar to publish it, but eventually she changed her mind and this stunning image opened Diane's retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in 1972."

sonofsamiam, chill dude. I was commenting on something I see all the time, but that nobody could explain when I asked. Good lord, it was hardly an attack on her. It wasn't even an attack on the hair. It was a Seinfeldian "Have ya ever noticed that hair? What's up with that?" comment. Not an attack on your (presumed) hipness. For a while I found the Bettie Page hair hawt, but then I went to this bar and every female-type person there had it. Including the barkeep. It was rather disorienting. After that, I kind of picked out the Bettie Page-sportin' person as a certain "type." Kind of like the overweight guy with the black, thick-rimmed glasses and the goatee, wearing black. You move in certain circles, and I suppose you see the same person again and again.

Which is unfair, I realize. I feel like a moron putting people into "types," but a lot of people definitely fit into certain visual molds. And you get sick of seeing the same templates again and again. My first instinct was to not like this gal, just because of the 'do. But, whether or not this post was the best of the web, I dig that shirt. I don't exactly get the mass obsession with Cooper (is it Gawker's fault?), but that shirt is hilarious. Perhaps because I don't get the attraction. Anyway, she's got moxy, and more power to her.

How could a heterosexual person such as he have such ginormous closets?

In all seriousness, has Cooper made any comments about his sexuality? I always hear innuendos about it, but never anything specific from him. Is he (1) out publicly, (2) out to his friends/family, (3) people like brundlefly are making too big a deal out of it or (4) totally in the closet, despite all the gossip rags.

Or, uh, is he straight? I forgot about that option.

I'd like to see an openly gay anchor. If the dude is gay, he should come out. He's charismatic, good lookin'. Not a walking stereotype like the guys from Queer Guy. If the guy is gay, he owes it to America to come out.

One topic that is glaringly absent from Dispatches is that of his private life. In particular, Cooper's sexuality has been a source of broad speculation for some time. But it's a subject he refuses to address publicly. "I do my job and that's really what I'm about," he says. "The rest I have no interest in talking about and people can make up their own minds and think what they want."
-Macleans

Seriously though, while I see your point... it's his life. I mean, the dude's baby picture is world famous, his mom was Gloria Vanderbilt, I'm just surprised he isn't wearing kleen-ex boxes on his feet and saving his pee.

And exlotuseater: Sorry for being thick, but I'm not sure if you're agreeing with me or not. And really, isn't that the only thing that matters here? :D
I'm not the type of person to fawn over or be starstruck by a celeb - which is what mrgrimm meant by wanking, I believe - either, I was just goofing that he meant it literally, IE fantasizing about Angelina Jolie is yucky as opposed to the highly attainable, completely approachable girl one sees at the bus stop every morning.

I think threads like this one with snarking can be a just hangin' out on Friday thread, shootin' the breeze, using a silly topic to do it, fluff and fun.

There's danger in putting people on pedestals, not seeing them as real, human, flawed. However, there's also something likeably lighthearted in April's mischievous t shirt and her admiring enthusiasm. It's a goof, her being female admiring a gay man, outing him as gay -playfully disrespectfully- by complimenting him as if she were a gay man with a boner. It's got some good twists there.

You are completely right. I apologize. It's nobody's business but their own. But I do think there needs to be some public figure, outside of Queer Eye or Will and Grace, who is openly gay without making a career out of their "gayness."

It's that person's business whether they come out, of course, but I think it would be very productive if someone in Cooper's position came out. I'm just tired of seeing gay people in mass media being fashion consultants and snarkly supporting characters in sitcoms. There's no reason for that shit, and a respected journalist coming out publically could do a lot of good, I think.

Alvy Ampersand makes reference to Howard Hughes in his final years of recluse:
"This is all before his psychic collapse into fear of large-scale germ warfare via Kleenex, a mental illness that Higham suggests Hughes picked up from his mother, a monumental cleanliness nut. As for the bisexual hearsay, Higham says he got it from Lawrence Quirk, nephew of Photoplay publisher James Quirk, who got it straight from Hughes's bisexual uncle Rupert Hughes, who got it from Hughes himself during a confessional outpouring. Higham says that Hughes's ``sexual partners were not so much lovers as hostages, prisoners or victims of his will; he had to dominate in everything.' The author tells of Hughes's descent into Hollywood S&M, and as for his news about Hughes paying off Hubert Humphrey and Richard Nixon: It may not be new, but it comes strongly documented. The recluse's last years are...ripe--he even takes to storing his urine in Mason jars."
