This might be interesting if the show actually were what the premise is (ordinary guys who love TV get to make a TV show), but the fact that this is simply the premise for a professionally made show with professional actors and writers makes it come off as a major wank-job.

I tried to watch it, but it's so cliched. It's a show made by high school/college kids and the primary audience is elementary school/high school kids.

How far did y'all get? I agree it's rather groany at times, but there's some interesting post-modern stuff that redeemed it a bit for me. The moment the one guy first walks onto the sound stage in front of the studio audience is pretty great. As is the reaction of the assistant woman sitting at the desk when the audience laughs at the other guy climbing the buidling in the background.
Pilots are generally rough, so I can forgive the ham-fisted hamminess and the over-wrought delivery. But the concept was pretty interesting, I think.

Well, it may not be cause of you tube, but stuff like this is already happening. DVD sales brought Family Guy back from the dead. And apparently the Internet has trumped Second City as the breeding ground for future SNL players (I believe three SNLers were discovered via "Awesometown" which was a failed pilot -- not unlike the one linked to by the OP -- that circulated on the net).
Lastly, should anyone not know, this pilot was shot for the 2005-06 season (so it was passed on not this spring, but last).

I like it. The deadpanning isn't as good as Curb your enthusiasm - the VP is the best - but it also doesn't suck out all my optimism about human nature like that show.
Is Will the same actor as played Billy in Battlestar Galactica? He's so distinctive, I thought I would know him, but I can't find anything on IMDB about the sitcom. Nobody's Watching turns up a 2004 documentary.

The futon critic lists it as from the 2005-2006 season and presumably not picked up. Plus it was for the WB, which no longer exists.

Explained here (a link like that would've been useful in the FPP). Some good comedic minds were behind that (Creator of Scrubs, two Family Guy writers), who should've done better. But hey, I once met a writer who got a job on M*A*S*H after the failure of his own show "The Waverly Wonders" starring Joe Namath (one of the biggest stinkers in TV history, and that's saying a lot).
But please, everybody, if you stop posting YouTube FPPs, maybe mr_crash_davis will stop posting bestiality FPPs. Sounds like a fair deal to me.

It seemed promising, but quickly went downhill. I totally agreed with them in the first clip (what the hell has happened to sitcoms?) and was really hoping this would become something interesting, but nope.
I agree with TonyRobots re: the pomo stuff; coulda been a contenda but was badly-executed.

I liked the beginning, the setup. Postmodern has potentional. But then they actually made it a "sitcom" with an audience and cued laughter....stopped being so great suddenly.

I really like meta television, so you'd think I'd love this one. It's Garry Shandling's Show was great and plumbed some of these same things.
This one is just too Waynes World or something.
The idea of really watching two people create a sitcom is also interesting except then you'd get Project Greenlight for the small screen, and that would probably suck too.

FYI: The Lonely Island, the website of the three gods among men who made Awesometown. It's available for download there, as well as most of their other skits (some are on youtube). I personally enjoy "White Power" under Episodes.

I really liked it. The real-life-as-sitcom thing seriously appeals to me. The plot was pretty flat, but then it is a pilot.

Fucking terrific. IF IF IF if it becomes (much like "Arrested Development") a criticism of how good shows get dumbed up and watered down for mainstream audiences, then I could easily see this being a great show.
Can't you picture them...a few shows in...responding directly to internet naysaying? I tell you what...that shot in the third part, at the end, with all of the black male applicants...I laughed out loud.
Put me in the "I want to see more" column.

This thing is deader than disco. It is an entire pilot season old, if nobody has bought it by now, nobody will buy it.

Initially I only watched the first segment and was unimpressed. Later, after reading a comment up thread that referred to a joke that I couldn't remember seeing I watched the second and third segments and it grew on me some. Worth watching only to hear an off-screen Alan Thicke announce that it's his real hair. Now I can't determine if the aspects of it that make it seem like just another bad UPN, WB, early Fox comedy (the drippingly false enthusiasm, for example) are intentional satire of cheesy sitcom formulas or actual cheesy sitcom formulas.

Yes, I do, that's why I used it. If I don't know the meaning of a word, I look it up in the dictionary. There are a few attempts at deadpanning (notably from the VP, who was pretty good at it), but they weren't as good. The series might have been better if they had actually gone for a more deadpan realistic acting style when not hamming to the audience, but maybe then it would have been too much the Garry Shandling Show or Curb. And frankly, those are both good, but have limited audiences. I could see this as potentially more widely appealing.
As for offending the television gods, Curb your Enthusiasm has some great actors (I would love to see more improv), some good writing, but its all being wasted on characters and storylines which make me want to turn it off and go wash out my brain. They are so vapid, so pointless and so unlikable that the show becomes pointless. So forgive me if I don't hold it in the same reverence as the television gods demand.

No one who aspires to write for tv can ever make a decent sitcom. The people who write great tv are failed novelists and playwrights.
