The Hazards of America's 10 Most Popular Foods: Your local grocery store is pushin' some baaad stuff.

This post was deleted for the following reason: these people are also pushing bad stuff, SLOE-ish pusherfilter.

• High sugar content. Sugar causes wrinkles.

Wrinkles are indeed hazardous, but are they popular?

If God didn't want us to eat hamburgers he wouldn't have made them taste so good.

According to everyone everything is bad for you. Or is that just what I've heard?

Too many exclamation points:

Fries are cooked in oxidized oil that is re-used for weeks at a time!

Not at my house. Seriously, for some reason, this struck me as a little alarmist. Maybe it was all the !!! but it seems off kilter. Here is another one that made me chuckle:

o Tomato sauce made from tomato-like substances that produce their own pesticides, IN YOU

But, another reminder to be careful what you eat can't hurt.
Now, where'd I put those donuts? Hurray for chemicals!!

I'm thinking this website is pushin' some baaad stuff, too.

Flagged. Get this crap off my MetaFilter, and I don't say that lightly.

What's the deal with all the "genetically modified" wheat talk in the pizza segment? Did they run low on actual bad things to talk about? Are we supposed to believe the wheat will grow to giant size and destroy Tokyo or something?

• French fries are very toxic.

Ummm....

tox·ic (tŏk'sĭk)
adj.

1. Of, relating to, or caused by a toxin or other poison.
2. Capable of causing injury or death, especially by chemical means; poisonous.

Um, sugar causes wrinkles?

The same old story about soda dissolving a nail in four days?

While I've no doubt that these foods are on the whole unhealthy, this top ten list is more hype and sensationalism than dietary science.

And I think they mean acrylamides, not acrylimides.

I'm having a burger to celebrate this post.

Lots of unsubstantiated allegations:

6. Soda:

• The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. On the Ph scale, it is very acidic and can dissolve a nail in about 4 days.

In a much higher concentration and amount than you'd find in a serving of Coke. A metric ton of communion wafers can crush you to death, too.

• High acid content in the body makes it very difficult to lose weight.

Since we're just making unsubstantiated allegations, fitamerica.com was founded by Timothy McVeigh and Darth Vader and Whitey Bulger sits on their board of advisors.

• Soda will leach the calcium out of your bones and promote osteoporosis.

Again with the weird claims. My belief is that reading fitamerica.com will leach the neurons out of your brain and promote Down's Syndrome.

From the article:

Commercial pizzas are made exclusively of 5 genetically modified foods [including]:

o Tomato sauce made from tomato-like substances that produce their own pesticides, IN YOU

I have no idea what that means, but it sounds awesome.

I am far more troubled by this article's lack of citations then its dire warnings about my country's favorite foods.

Yet most of us eat lots of this shit and yet somehow...we live. Life is a sexually transmitted terminal disease. Deal with it, relax and indulge.

Many beverages served at restaurants contain crystallized fragments of dihidrogen oxide; the compound is frequently employed as a "stabilizing agent" for alcoholic substances.

What? MSG is used to "fatten up labratory animals and will ultimately make you fat when consumed"?

I don't think so.

I question this site's credibility. It looks like it's set up purely to promote "MetaboFit," which is apparently "better than Ephedra." Newsflash: weight-loss "herbal supplements" are bad for you:
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and a number of state Attorney General have successfully brought cases against marketers of pills claiming to absorb or burn fat. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned 111 ingredients once found in over-the-counter diet products. None of these substances, which include alcohol, caffeine, dextrose, and guar gum, have proved effective in weight-loss or appetite suppression.
A large number of the "health claims" on this site are bullshit and half-truths.

FoB has it, this is a bad link. The only material absent from the copy was a pathetic segue into their line of lifestyle products. Throw the killswitch.

Jesus, the crap they are selling as "100% natural and safe" is nothing but a bunch of low-rent speed. They're essentially selling ECA stacks (ephedrine, caffeine, aspirin) to people deluding themselves into thinking they're being "natural" and healthy.

Just snort some methamphetamine and get it over with. You'll lose weight faster.

Surely I can't be the only one that read this and went "In Soviet Russia, pesticides produce their own tomatoes IN YOU!"

Yes, I know we're not on SlashDot. Have some Pepsi Blue.

Hey, I've been eating tomato-like substances all my life...

Farmers of America! Pay me to urinate on your crops!

Oh yeah, if any of you mefites need any critters taken care of with my own brand of completely organic pesticides, just let me know! $10 bucks a cup. That's the discount rate.

Exactly! My diet consists entirely of Metabofit, and I've never been happier.

This web site is heavily laden with loosely defined terms and pseudoscientific language. It is throwing in scientific jargon and may be doing this to give an appearance of knowledgablity. It shows no sceptical awareness and so should be treated with a suspicious mind.
