Cool.

But you also have to respect the tastes of the King of Beaver.

(not my fault if you go to the homepage!!!)

Thanks for this - great post! I will skip the videos of songs I can't tolerate, but there are plenty of guilty pleasures in her, for sure!

They both omitted Horses; oh well, tastes differ.

Wow. Jonathan Glazer made Radiohead tolerable. I had no idea he made videos before he made movies.

I like these a bit better then the ones from pitchfork.

I really like Stylus. They seem to be mostly free of the air of "hip" that hangs our Pitchfork like a burrito fart.

Not a bad list, but they put the #1 one at #2.

Yay! Go Radiohead! I knew "Just" had to be near the top somewhere.....

It's just a shame that Youtube's resolution is so bad, it really ruins "Let Forever Be". Also, I'm not getting any audio on "089. Kid606 – Sometimes"

From the article:

I was about ten years old when I first saw the video for “1979,” and I fully expected it to be a forecast of what the next ten years of my life were going to be like. Or, at least, I hoped as much.

Wow. I feel old :P

Suprised neither of them had Sugar Water by Cibo Matto

Was delighted to see Pulp's Bad Cover Version here as well as on the Pitchfork list. Maybe not the greatest music video of all time, but for me at least, the most enjoyable.

Wow, I wish they had found and uncensored version of 99 problems.
posted by delmoi at 10:57 PM on July 22, 2006

Sad, I've only seen 2 of the top 10 (G Thang and Just). But I think the rest of my personal top 10 were on there. Lots of good stuff, and how awesome is it that you can actually watch the videos right there, right away.

God bless YouTube. Seriously.
Amen.

And there in the flesh is the exact link I was so god damned hot to post. Glad I didn't, though I do like Stylus Magazine, and I find it amazing they have never had a direct link from here until now.

Anyone have high-resolution versions of these bookmarked somewhere? I seem to remember a post a few months back...

Thanks Caddis for filling up my evening!

I didn't know before that there was actually a video for one of my favorite songs by the Talking Heads Once in a Lifetime #20. Oh the joy!

I have to admit seeing A-Ha at #4 made me gag a little. Too much PBS in my youth and I loathe that video & song (after seeing it played way too often).

"99 Problems", without edits

I also had hoped they'd use this one instead.

I don't know if it's the light in here but, through the pleasure of seeing familiar faces and the happy times, it's the painful marks which linger. Nostalgia is a sweet skin 'round the sour tragedy of knowing you've already lost the only youth you'll ever have.
All these men are dead now.

Not a bad list at all. Though as mentioned upthread, "Sugar Water" should be on all these lists.

Massive Attack's Unfinished Sympathy didn't make either list, but should have.
posted by prolific at 6:56 AM on July 23, 2006

This list is way better than the Pitchfork list, and while I still would have liked to see Pearl Jam's "Do The Evolution" or Genesis' "Land of Confusion", the addition of Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" kind of makes up for not having those. Allen Ginsberg is a music video super star.

What the hell is it with the Futurehead's cover of Hounds Of Love? Awful, awful version, below average video, dull group. And yet it's seemingly revered.

Also, your favourite band and their best video both suck.

The long-form video of Thriller will always be number one, haters.

Are you kidding? Stylus's modus operandi is to try to out-hipster Pitchfork.

Where's the top 100 lists of top 100 lists? I wanna know which top 100 list is the number one top 100 list so I know to pay attention to that one and say the hell to all the other top 100 lists about top 100 lists which have top 100 lists in them. This is kickass music I wanna put it in a top 100 list of top 100 lists that have top 100 lists in them.

Let me save everyone a lot of time:

The absense of [insert any band of significance to you which was not on that list] makes this a deeply flawed list.

Fell in Love with a Girl:
...The video’s great unsung reference point—8-bit video games. A = Strum. B = Cymbal Crash. Thumb in A-B-A-B-Up-Down-Left-Right to unlock Buddy Holly lightning round.

BEST. REVIEW. EVER.

Of course, they say that the video doesn't feature the stars -- but by not featuring Jack & Meg you're forced to, y'know, enjoy the music.

I was pleasantly surprised that "Hurt" ranked so high. It's an amazing tour-de-force, the best compilation montage of a man's life I can imagine. (Backed, of course, by a cool song I already liked.)

Forgot to mention my unlisted favorite -- Carpark North's Human (dir: Martin de Thurah). The way it forces you to look at the kids without seeing them as small adults, sensualizing experience without sexualizing it, is bracing.

Have to agree with you Card Cheat, that Johnny Cash video is one of the most powerful, moving things I've ever seen.

absolutley not based on a name at all...just my opinion, can't understand why people love this guy...anyway, I guess that's what this list and comments are all about.

Replacements in at #7 - I can live with that.

mrblack, a great video is one that you can enjoy watching even if you wouldn't otherwise listen to the song. There are several of those on this list. I actually like the Jamiroquai song (come on, it's sorta Stevie Wonderish...) but I think if I didn't the video would still be impressive.
