Any idea who first thought of the upside-down A for "for all" ∀ and the backwards E for "exists" ∃ ?

I'm naturally apprehensive towards a site discussing the etymology of, well, anything when they can't even spell etymology correctly...

Ethymology of Symbols, indeed.

Other than that, cool!

handee:
The backwards E was first used by Peano in 1897. The upside-down A was invented by Gentzen in 1935. ^

This new Wikipedia notation just keeps getting more and more confusing...

This is bizarre, I was thinking of doing an FPP on punctuation and symbols and things.

Wikipedia says the section sign (§) has some very wide-ranging uses:

* symbol of justice in Poland
* symbol of currency in the Sims
* symbol of classification in biology
* symbol to warn of snakes in the Kalahari desert because to read the word 'snake' is very bad luck

Hmm, I can name a movie that might have to be substantially recut before it reaches Botswana.

I find "and per se and" to be wickedly funny. Any truth to the statement that the ampersand used to be the unofficial 27th letter of the alphabet? Wikipedia isn't sure.

Is Ethymology a legitimate alternate spelling of Etymology? Wiki has an entry with a redirect as does Columbia Encyclopedia.

The online dictionary I just used just redirected Ethymology to etymology. I don't know if that means the dictionary thinks the H is a typo or if ethymology is just used much less often.

The ampersand must be dirty, because f&#k is more obscene than f$@K or f*#k, but I was wondering if Google would say, "Did you mean: fuck?

I can only draw ampersands if I think of them as backwards, slightly modified treble clef signs. Clearly I am a sad, sad person.
