2006 Elections, interactive style

New York Times 2006 interactive elections map. A really impressive guide to the current House, Senate, and governor races with all of the poll data and analysis a political junky could ask for; plus the ability to modify the maps by population, ethnicity, and income levels. It also allows you to play out scenarios. [registration may be required]

That's pretty cool, but I don't think I'll be following this year's election in horse racing style. 2004 shattered any joy I used to get from that. Also, as the paper of record that didn't publish Bush's FISA violations until after the 2004 elections, the NYT is an enemy of democracy and can go thoroughly fuck itself.

Maine is REPUBLICAN? Holy cow. Is that merely the Kennebunkport effect?

This is a great resource, but there are other interactive election maps out there that don't force you to register to use them, including Dave Leip's invaluable site.

blahblahblah, Excellent post. It's an interesting map. Educational. Thanks.

squirrel, Care to share more about the NYT? I'm unfamiliar with what you're talking about and would like to know.

Same goes for Mother Nature! How DARE she send Katrina AFTER the 2004 election!!!

Nick, dw: have you two been living in a cave? You didn't know that the NYT had the NSA wiretapping story before the 2004 election, but chose to say nothing for over a year? Allow me to google for you.

squirrel, Actually, I was out of commission for a year undergoing chemo/radiation and didn't keep on top of the news. But poor widdle me excuse aside (handy to cover up ignorance about a lot of things, lol) I just didn't know. Thanks for the education.

Bah! Kids today with their chemo! When I was a lad, we drank TAR! Seriously, though... glad to help. Now go tell five others.

FISA, not FEMA.

So if the two Senate tossups go Dem, then the split is 52/48 to the Republicans. Lumping RINOS Snowe & Chafee over to the Dems side gives us an evenly split Senate, (with Cheney as the tie-breaker)

Coolness.

Unfortunately, the absolute best case for the Dems in the Senate looks much worse than the best version for the GOP.

The House, by the way, is 220 R, 202 D, and 13 toss-up. Doesn't look even close.

(Incidentally, one of my favorite things about this site is how useful it is for Internet political talk. It lets you directly link to any outcome you would like, using the little "copy to clipboard" button in the lower right. I view it, to extend the football analogy from before, as having my own version of John Madden's white lightpen he uses to draw on the screen and illlustrate plays.)

There are several house seats in Georgia that are marked as >10% R margin in 2004, but D current representative. Anyone know what's up with that?

...upon examination of the results, I guess it's just an error. 5 of them should be >10% D margin, and the other should be <5% D.
