It's posting a MadTV link that you should be apologizing for.

The Gray's Anatomy one, although 4 minutes too long, has a few laughs for anyone who's suffered though an episode of that sub-ER/sub-Desperate Housewives/sub-the worst thing you've ever seen shitfest.

My first link was about deadwood.

I've had to say that a lot recently. Hmmmm.

Also: Deadwood pancakes was excellent, so +digg.

Can't say I understand the MadTV thing (never heard of that show)... does Larry King have a reputation for being .... verbose and stupid when talking about TV or something?
posted by dobbs at 7:46 PM on August 20, 2006

Prepare to laugh. Kenny Rogers' Jackass.
posted by davebush at 8:17 PM on August 20, 2006

Yeah, that representation of Larry King seemed a little weird to me as well.

Why is it I never really want to watch a show until I see it parodied?
posted by chudmonkey at 8:21 PM on August 20, 2006

holy shit Deadwood Pancakes was horrible. I mean jesus christ just because the internet is there for you to make a total ass beyond and sense of redemption doesn't make you gotta go for it. it's like the asshole who tries to tell you about the comedian's great act he saw last night by doing the act and it's so bad you want to hit him the nuts with something dense.

i weep for that man.

xmutex is like the asshole who tries to tell you he doesn't like something by broadly exaggerating everything involved with it, including his own emotional response to it. I mean jesus christ just because the internet is there for you to make a total ass beyond and sense of redemption doesn't make you gotta go for it.

i weep for that man.

okay, Kenny Roger's jackass was kinda funny. You'd never see SNL trying that.
posted by fungible at 8:35 PM on August 20, 2006

I say this everyone I discuss the show with, but I don't think I've said it here yet:

The show, whenever possible, must be referred to as Deadwood, Cocksucker. For truly, if ever there were a show it should be impossible to talk about without being profane, it is this one.

My favorite episode goes from 0 to Cocksucker in under a minute (if you don't count the main title sequence, under three minutes if you do).

That there Kenny Rogers Jackass made me bust a nut gut.

(Strikethrough humor is the best humor there is.)

I didn't find that to be very funny.

Though to be perfectly honest, I'm pretty happy watching anything to do with Deadwood.

PS: "To everyone," rather.

PPS: Funny for a minute. Not funny for four. Kinda funny to see them use verbatim bits of Deadwood, Cocksucker.

This FPP masters boardwalks and quagmire with aplomb. Those who doubt me suck cock by choice.

Kinda funny to see them use verbatim bits of Deadwood,

They did?

dobbs: I just got done watching the first season yesterday, and could swear that the bit of dialogue between Bullock and Mrs. Garret in the MADtv sketch is actually from an episode of Deadwood, Cocksucker .

Other parts, I'm not so sure, but I could swear that one was verbatim (whether by accident, or on purpose). There really is a scene where Bullock's all, "Would you think better of me if I said I'm the Health Inspector?"
posted by sparkletone at 9:13 PM on August 20, 2006

There's plenty to poke fun at with Deadwood. Being stupid while mocking a show for being smart is just lame.
posted by Brandon Blatcher at 9:18 PM on August 20, 2006

sparkletone: Yeah, that's from episode 9 of season 1. But it's not verbatim; it's close, sure, but they paraphrased (or the actor fucked up his line).

Forgive me. I'm just a stickler.
posted by dobbs at 9:27 PM on August 20, 2006

dobbs: If I weren't lazy, and distracted by Simpsons commentaries, I would've gone and looked up the actual wording used on Deadwood, Cocksucker .

Thanks for the catch.

Ah the cock suckery of it all.
posted by wtfchuck at 9:47 PM on August 20, 2006

I thought Deadwood (Cocksucker) Pancakes was pretty damned funny. If they weren't quoting verbatim, they certainly captured the poefanity* just fine.
Anyone can cuss, and some can do it with skill and flavor. Deadwood... well, they raise it to an art form.
Also, for those who liked the Kenny Rogers Jackass bit, this should also amuse: Kenny Rogers Fear Factor.
*(Poetry + profanity, natch. Google has no hits on it, which means I coined it! Contact me for licensing info.)

That was funny?
posted by zardoz at 9:58 PM on August 20, 2006

Deadwood Pancakes is infinitely funnier than the MadTV bit, predominantly because it gets to freely utilize the word "fuck" at opportune times. Whereas MadTV gets to freely prosletyze the Mad trademark to optimum profit.

Seven Minutes in Deadwood is all you need ("mp3, not safe for shit - wall to wall cursing and ethnic slurs").
posted by kirkaracha at 10:13 PM on August 20, 2006

Is that even classifyable as "parody?"

MadBoring.
posted by odasaku at 10:18 PM on August 20, 2006

In hindsight it's possible the people behind MadTV were not trying to mock Deadwood (Cocksucker). They were making fun of Larry King and used Deadwood (Cocksucker) as the figurative comedic straight man. The bit actually would have been funnier had they had the rights to use actual original footage from the series. Because they couldn't they tried to play the Deadwood parts without humor, except perhaps whoever was doing Calamity. Maybe she didn't get the memo.
posted by ZachsMind at 10:23 PM on August 20, 2006

Too long. By about halfway through, I would have rathered being poor Ellsworth.

But yeah, this is more a Larry King-spoof than a Deadwood-spoof. MadTV wanted to make a SNL-style Sean Connery on Jeopardy! bit where 'famous guy says dirty things' but didn't have anyone who could do a good Larry King impression.

You know how celebs complain that people who see them in the street shout their catchphrases at them and they get fed up of it? What do you think people shout at Ian McShane?
posted by biffa at 9:36 AM on August 21, 2006

teh lameness is complete.
and no, that ain't fucking deadwood.
and further, I suppose MadTV learned jack shit from SNL's achilles' heel (running skits too long, replacing the mildly funny stuff with the opportunity to void one's bowels)

there is some truth to how it's heard, though, in how they try to emulate it.

a couple of the Larry King quotes cracked me up, though, early on.

What do you think people shout at Ian McShane?

Nothing. If they do they better be smiling.

Or running.
