It seems to me that a simple stamp - which could easily have a pattern like those on bookplates - would be a lot simpler than mucking about with paste and slips of paper.
That said, the general concept is a great one, and this link has some very fine examples.

A stamp wouldn't show up on marbled, illustrated or simply dark-colored endpapers. That accounts for an awful lot of books.

Fascinating -- Beautiful -- Although he freely admits that his scanner's colors are off and the best places he can think to buy a new one are Radio Shack and Staples. At least he was sensible enough to be frustrated by the staff.

Great post. My wife made me a bookplate for a birthday a few years ago. A kind of aubrey beardsley-esque anthropomorphic monkey playing with a large cog. Bookplates are about as cool as smoking hats.

There are so many to point to, but I really like the "Boyce Nute is the boss of this book" teddy bear, the old guys in the library, and the whole curse post. Especially the Web .000001b version of the dirty googlebomb.
