Is anyone else sick to death of aggregators?
posted by autodidact at 11:59 AM on November 21, 2006

I'd like to aggregate all the Hot Topics in the world. It would make it easier to find and destroy emo kids.

it's totally tipped me off to hot new underground trends like borat, the wii, and nipples.

Aggregate this! [Insert animated GIF of 3 little kittens, dressed up like the sharks from West Side Story, flipping the bird and smoking cigarettes]

I'd like to like it, but the format is completely impenetrable and has the actual links are buried deep within the secondary pages. At the very least it needs a page listing new links and a corresponding RSS feed.

Reverse chrono, people.

These hot topics on the web, where can I find them?

paul_smatatoes:
After reading your post, I did some research on this Borat fellow. Let me tell you, beneath his slick and charming exterior, the man is an unregenerate anti-semite and misogynist! Do not fall under his suave spell!

So... reddit got a facelift?

Now, to be fair, this is a perfect tool for otherwise unhip parents to bring up some engaging topics of conversation when they call their adolescent offspring to the dinner table on Friday Family Nights. And lose even more credibility in the process.
posted by BlackPebble at 12:47 PM on November 21, 2006

Yes this should start a perfectly good Friday Night Family Conversation:

"Nipple Slips: This is the easiest way for a girl to get attention in the media without having to resort to sex tapes and all that fussy stuff."

Like the content of Buzzfeed itself, the link to it has been bouncing around on the blogs I read for about a week now, making it slightly less than fresh.

May I drag out the usual question: What do you all recommend instead of Buzzfeed?

Personally, I wish Gabe Rivera would extend his Techmeme and Memeorandum tool to more topics, even one for general news.

And I hope Kevin Burton's Tailrank matures.

How about some content?

Everybody wants to make the latest Aggregator so they can turn it on and make ad money without doing any work.

A little tiresome.

What do you all recommend instead of Buzzfeed?

Hmm - it's like we need a place where people can contribute the links they think are interesting and noteworthy, and the community as a whole can function as a "filter" or "prioritization"....where links to a wide range of interesting topics could be shared, ranging from the super-technical to the cultural and artistic....man I wish I knew a site like that.

Would that this paradise existed, freebird.

soon we're going to need aggregator aggregators.
posted by mrbill at 1:44 PM on November 21, 2006 [1 favorite]

I like popurls.com.
posted by spock at 1:47 PM on November 21, 2006

It's a good time to be actually making something neat, though -- because every aggregator under the sun links to it, and before you know where you are you've got visitors out the wazoo, or whatever it is da kidz say nowadays.
posted by reklaw at 1:47 PM on November 21, 2006

StrasbourgSecaucus how'd you do that? That was cool.

And yes..this FPP? Laaaame!
posted by forwebsites at 2:03 PM on November 21, 2006

Man, tough crowd. I thought it was a pretty cool site for tracking general trends that come and go, instead of up-to-the-second lastest links in the blogosphere, which I've seen done a million times already.
posted by mathowie at 2:11 PM on November 21, 2006

I reiterate: Meh.

MetaFilter: Man, tough crowd.

Hey, at least they aren't coming over here and saying that there should be forks up our asses.

I thought it was OK, except for the fact that I just don't care that much. Meme-tracking: tired.

It just feels a bit self-serving. Feedback loop.

(1) Scrape the web to work out what everyone's talking about.
(2) Put those popular topics on a page.
(3) People read that page to find out what's popular, so they can continue to talk about it.
(4) ...
(5) Profit!

I don't know about you, but I'd rather an aggregator that shows me "Here's a pile of obscure stuff you've never heard before!" than an aggregator that shows me "Here's a pile of stuff that's currently on every blog under the sun!"
posted by Jimbob at 2:33 PM on November 21, 2006

(Although, on second thought, the presence of pages like this mean I might never have to actually read blogs...that's got to be a positive.)
posted by Jimbob at 2:34 PM on November 21, 2006

I was underwhelmed but I did like the fact that nip slips made it as one of their debut memes. Just seemed kind of random, would like to see more randomness on there.
posted by cell divide at 2:54 PM on November 21, 2006

I wish there were an aggregator that aggregated other aggregator sites. If there were several siters that aggregated aggregators, we could aggregate those, too.
posted by Joey Michaels at 3:02 PM on November 21, 2006 [1 favorite]

Also, if by "randomness" cell divide means "nips" then I, too, want more randomness.

> Hey, at least they aren't coming over here and saying that there should be forks up our asses.

Actually, you know, they are.
posted by jfuller at 4:02 PM on November 21, 2006

Strasbourg, I repeat: how did you do that? Is that a font or something?

On-topic: I thought the site was cool, even if I am too out of touch to know what is actually a current trend.

Quick gut reactions:

1. Hasn't this been done a thousand times before (thinking: blogdex, bloglines, reddit, popurls, digg etc)?

2. Since when did 4-21 links (averaging around 7) constitute "hot buzz"?

3. Are peoples' heads really as full of total shit as these hot topics suggest?
posted by UbuRoivas at 4:38 PM on November 21, 2006

Let me know when there's an aggregator that scours the web looking for things that nobody is talking about, then throws 'em on the front page.
posted by davejay at 4:58 PM on November 21, 2006

Are peoples' heads really as full of total shit as these hot topics suggest?

Consider all of the people you encounter in your daily life.

Now what do you think the answer to that question is?

Let me know when there's an aggregator that scours the web looking for things that nobody is talking about

Web memes anywhere from two weeks to two years old, worksafe-filtered but topically diverse enough to be 'edgy' to people who say 'edgy' and mean it.

If I was in charge of pitching comarketing concepts to executives in charge of youth-oriented products, or if I was editing the lifestyles section of a suburban newspaper, this site would rock my world.
