Metafilter - reviving mid-90s British comedy since er... 1999. And a good thing too. Can we have some Fast Show clips next?

1. Make fake instructional video from a bygone era.

2. Insert mildly politically incorrect premise (ie women aren't as smart or articulate as men.)

3.

4. Profit!

This is lame...

Greycap, how about Rowley Birkin, 1, 2, 3, and the sad number 4.

wfrgms, you could summarize and similarly diss just about any type and category of humor with four similar points, thus proving nothing about the quality of any given bit of comedy. You don't find it funny, that's OK, but the I'd say the lameness you refer to applies to your post about Enfield's sketch rather than the sketch itself.

It always breaks my heart that Dr. Angus plays second fiddle to the Creepy Burger King.

He's all about finding joy, about finding pleezure. We're all full of sits, man, and that's something I can get behind.

Man, "lame" is about as overused a word as you can find. Right up there with "sucks". If only folks would exercise their vocabulary muscles a wee bit more, MeFi would be a more interesting place to dwell...

This sucks so much that it became lame, collasped on itself and created a second sucking effect, which in turn became lame because it repeated the first part.

At first I thought that comment was kinda funny, then I sorta got to thinking it was kinda lame, and now I think it just basically sucks. Then it started sucking in reverse, which of course means that it blows. It really blows.

Greycap, how about Rowley Birkin, 1, 2, 3, and the sad number 4.

God, number 4 is too much to bear. The chap Rowley Birkin, Q.C. is based on, a fishing mate of Paul Whitehouse called, improbably, Andrew Rollo, was on a documentary about the Fast Show a couple of years back - quite alarming to see the real person mumbling away in that exact style. Very posh people are so weird.

It ain't serious enough to be devoid of a laugh track, in British comedy terms. Only Chris Morris and Steve Coogan get to go without the laugh track.
posted by snoktruix at 7:53 AM on November 24, 2006

I thought the first one was kind of funny, despite my past radical feminist tendencies...but I followed the link to the "women and motorcars" movie, and it was just the same joke, complete with kittens. Is this guy 5? Because five-year-olds like to tell the same joke over and over again, and to them, it's just as funny every time.

seriously, can we please lay off shitting on british comedy? unless it's being done in jest and I'm missing it. But seriously, comedy related threads really shouldn't be an opportunity for people to chime in with how much they hate this or that country's comedy, or this or that comedian, etc...

Your favorite slang term for general disparagement sucks.

If only folks would exercise their vocabulary muscles a wee bit more

You mean, by using words like "wee"?

I think disparaging slang will always be childish and lowbrow. It just goes with the territory. It's much more satisfying to say something "sucks" than to say it "besmirches the dignity of the human spirit" or whatever.

The video in the post is just ... OK not "lame," but utterly milquetoast. It's making fun of something that doesn't exist.
posted by Tuffy at 12:53 PM on November 25, 2006

doesn't exist anymore. The point of comedy is to find the remarkable and amusing in ourselves, and history is rife with places to do just that. The point of comedy is NOT to make someone feel bad, or to point fingers at people who currently exist. That may, at times, be part of comedy. But it is not the yardstick by which we measure comedy's quality.
