y2karl, are you getting kickbacks from YouTube?

And that Johnny Cash doing Elvis, man, that was a scream! Had no idea Cash was such a comedian: great comic moves!

Not sure I need lists of YouTube product here...

Not sure I need lists of YouTube product here...

Then you'll want to ignore this link: it's a very curious little clip (YouTube) of a record being played. It's a 78rpm, from 1957, of the Crickets (Buddy Holly wasn't getting top billing in their earliest days, apparently) doing Not Fade Away. It sounds fantastic, and just watching that black plastic spin around is so pleasing...

And apologies to y2karl if you already posted this at some point in the past: entirely likely, I know.

Rock-a-billy shows the country influence on early rock, this video shows some of the jazz influence:

Bill Haley - Rudy's Rock

By the way, another awesome post y2karl.

Johnny Burnette Trio - Train Kept a Rollin'

Okay, it ain't much of a video, but it's better than this!

Ooh, oooh! Tomorrow, do 80s songs! Or maybe 90s psychobilly/trailer rock.

Great stuff. I've always loved that Elvis impression that Johnny does. And for those who don't know, that Ronnie Hawkins link is a rare look at a very, very young version of The Band backing him up. Levon (my favorite drummer) looks like he's about twelve.

Oh, and Ronnie was moonwalking in 1959, incidentally.

Can someone please explain to me how the search function on YouTube works? I'm not sure I understand the complexities and I would like to make a post to MetaFilter's front page tomorrow.

Uh-oh, Steven C. Den Beste isn't going to like this.......

(rock on, y2karl)

Yeah, that's definitely Levon Helm, and I'd wager it's Richard Manuel on piano (impossible to tell for sure, though), but is that Robbie on guitar? Doesn't much look like him, but of course with the infamous lo-res of YouTube it's really hard to tell...

Another great set—thanks, y2karl, you magnificent deejay you!

I'm not sure. Looking at the video, my best guess is a young John Kerry.

This is a fantastic set of rock and roll gold. Thanks Y2Karl.

That "Sittin' in the Balcony" bit is both uncomfortable and hilarious - one of my favorite Eddie Cochran songs - not at all how I'd expect to see it portrayed!

About 1:30 into Gene Vincent - You Are My Sunshine is one of the best shots I've seen in a 1950's rock and roll video.

Are you referring to the shot of the girl in the audience and Vincent's leather clad legs?

Great post y2karl, my boss and my clients both hate you right now.

Nice. The Collins Kids especially. I could listen to them for hours on end. (Some Glen Glenn woulda been cool, but I won't quibble.)

It's a style that keeps getting revived because it's so timelessly cool. (And rockabilly chicks are hawt)

Johnny Horton - Battle Of New Orleans

OK, I suppose, but he's no Lonnie Donegan.
