Well, I guess it was a pretty lousy year

I think only about 11 of those haven't been posted here yet. All on the last page at least.

Sadly, none of the heavy hitters of 2006 are able to surpass the strange beauty of Bubb Rubb.

The whistles go woo.

(ah, ok, I see there's more than that one page)

Where is my DJ Ted Stevens video? I feel slighted.

It says "most popular" not best. I would hardly call "Girl shits in hot tub" a cinematic masterpiece.

But that's only in the mornin'! You should be cookin' breakfast or something!

My favorite part of that video is how he speeds right through the stop sign/intersection.

One of the greatest videos of all time.

I hadn't seen Bubb Rubb before. Thanks! haha.

That Tyra Banks clip is way beyond odd. It almost scared me. What on earth?

Good list, but iFilm still has huge problems with their media players. It crashes safari every other page.

I hadn't seen Bubb Rubb either (and I can't see the others because I do not have an account.) But in that video, the newscaster says the cops say the muffler noise in question is not illegal. Well, as is so often the case, the cops are wrong, especially about the law.

The California Vehicle Code has a provision called Adequate Muffler Required which states:

27150. (a) Every motor vehicle subject to registration shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise, and no muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass, or similar device.

It's an issue of enforcement, but such noise certainly is illegal. Lazy reporters. Sheesh.

What, no rail grind mishaps?
posted by Tube at 5:31 PM on December 14, 2006

I was going to make a joke about how nice it was to have these all wrapped up in one post instead of scattered throughout the year, but I changed my mind. I just don't care enough about the middling humor sparked by any of these to watch more than a couple at a time all the way through.

No offense intended, hama7.

Yeah, when I saw it I thought to myself "there's one video I'm not going to have a look at".

Tyra Banks was parodying the Oprah "and YOU get a car, and YOU get a car, and YOU get a car" episode.

The horse that rides around in a car was not on it. Boo.

Oh my god. Good Day, Mr. Kubrick is the most brilliant thing I've ever seen.

I thought viral implied it was produced specifically trying to sell you something. These are mostly just fuck-ups and mash-ups, from what I can tell.

The California Vehicle Code has a provision called Adequate Muffler Required which states

These vehicles have adequate mufflers. They also had a chuck of steel welded to the exhaust tip that caused it to whistle. Grey area at best.

That's ok, I'm pretty sure it's a fake.
posted by zardoz at 7:16 PM on December 14, 2006

Vaportrail, sorry, no, it's not a grey area. It's a modified muffler that is not properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise

We have a similar law up here, s. 7.03 of the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations. Many states have them.

Not that I'm aware. Viral videos were around well before it struck ad companies that they could spread their "message" with little effort.

Other than the Zuiikin girls, I don't think I've watched any of these, though I was aware of several.

Oh wait, Weird Al's "White and Nerdy" music video's on it. Seen that.

Whereas that was the first one I could be bothered to take a look at.

Eee-yuk!

And how come there's no Numa Numa?

Oh man, I remember those hateful whistle mufflers when I lived in Oakland...bubb rubb made it all ok however...I think they even have underwear with his face on it.

PMcD: There's no NumaNuma because that was clearly SoOOo 2004. Silly.

O-Zone didn't even have a surge in North American popularity like they should have.

Hadn't seen most of these. Thanks.
They alternately destroy and restore my faith in humanity.
posted by dreamsign at 7:23 AM on December 15, 2006

No, all kidding aside, why are Bubb Rubb and Li'l Sis allowed to operate a moving vehicle? 'Cause blowing through a STOP sign and driving into oncoming traffic isn't legal as far as I know. Even in Oaktown.

On the other hand, they are effective spokesmodels for the ravages of drugs, drink, a crap diet, minimal education, and unnecessary dental work, so, ahhh, what the heck, let 'em go, the rascals.

So how is the Guy Goma thing a viral video? Was that meant to be an ad for the BBC? Or is it an elaborate video-resume type of ad? Not many of these are viral at all.
posted by Eideteker at 1:01 PM on December 15, 2006

I honestly don't understand the idea that "viral" is supposed to mean "advertising." This is simply the advertising/marketing community trying to latch onto something with popularity and, if you look at the relatively few successes they've had, they clearly have a lot to learn.

Wikipedia's definition is pretty accurate, IMHO:

"The term viral video refers to video clip content which gains widespread popularity through the process of Internet sharing, typically through email or IM messages, blogs and other media sharing websites."
posted by dhammond at 1:25 PM on December 15, 2006

Ok, but that's new to me. I'd only ever heard of viral marketing. You know the whole "virus" connoting something not merely infectious but predatory. Benign virii don't get much press, so non-advertising uses of 'viral' for 'memetic' don't make much sense to me.
