Miniatures!

Sweet. I like the Alan Wolfson ones a lot.
I remember seeing--some time ago--a catalog for an exhibition by an artist who did miniature scenes like this, but built them in unusual places (on the side of a car, for example). S/he would then take photos of the sculptures and destroy the sculptures themselves. The resulting photographs were a weird game in perspective, because the miniature scene and the real-life scene were fighting each other in your mind.
Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

These are indeed wonderful. Now that's detail in a miniature! For those perhaps momentarily confused by the caption descriptions, note that the artist has made the common Japanese mistake of substituting "L" for "R" : The piece contains no fire! He's referring of course to the f'r'ame: "The total form (f'l'ame and base) is important too." Also his subject, the Ito-ya stationery shop, is still going strong today.

Stellar post, nj_subgenius - absolutely charming - thank you! All the links are great, but I particularly loved the work by Chen Fengxian from the link in the second "i".
Somewhat related, I found an artist who seems to be fascinated with tiny things - Cynthia Greig's Life Size gallery has some adorable tiny objects that look like they would fit in these miniature worlds. And if one were to populate these miniature worlds with creatures, then they would have to be from our own specklet's delightful gallery of tiny animals on fingers.

omg, the hermit crab and gecko are really amazing. My favorite is Chen Fengxian's pandas.
Followed closely by the Tube Bar, which I passed many times when flying out of the Holland Tunnel on the way home. Back in the days of WTC, anyway.

Great addition, jonson! This thread gets even better. Is there a word to describe a penchant for the tiny? Microphile? I have a bit of a tiny things fixation so this post is heaven.

SisterHavana, I have seen the Thorne exhibit - awesome - but the Fairy Castle is new to me. And Specklet, thanks - that truly is awesome stuff indeed. Boggling. I'm thrilled when I can thread a needle, let alone populate the eye with the six wives of Henry the Eighth.

Love those amazing miniatures nj_subgenius! How cool they are entire vignettes of places. Something mesmerising about the recreation of places on such a small scale.
