Don Imus has been fired

He made a mistake and said he was sorry He said three words and it cost him everything. What are words worth? 15 million? I think he got shafted. Rappers say the same thing.....he was shafted

Before this gets deleted, I'm going to disagree with you quite strongly, though it will seem like I'm being polite.

If another woman calls me a bitch, it means something entirely different than if a rich fat old white man calls me a bitch. And likewise with your rapper example.

Shafted, my ass. The guy was already living on borrowed career time.

This has nothing to do with free speech. The government, as far as I know, didn't come down on him -- the people who were paying him to speak did. And they have that right.

He said something very stupid and apparently quite offensive. When you're speaking on someone else's mic, you gotta be fucking careful about what you say. That's just how it works.

I actually kind of agree with you. But the thing is:
a) You're not really supposed to agree or disagree with Metafilter posts, and
b) I don't read Metafilter for the latest Don Imus news.

it will be just as unfair when they delete this thread. How's about adding your outrage to the existing Don Imus thread, Skeezix?

Frankly, the rappers should get fired too. There is just no place for racism, sexism or any kind of discrimination in civilized speech.
posted by oddman at 3:31 PM on April 12, 2007

This is all ridiculous. Imus did get shafted by a faux movement that Sharpton and Company are capitalizing on. They should look to their own community and begin cleaning up shop there, first.

I'm pretty sure on every radio or television in this country there is both a tuning dial, and an off/on switch of some sort. Why don't people just use them accordingly?

And why does what a washed up radio jock think about a women's basketball team no one has ever heard of even get on the national radar to begin with.

When people manufacture outrage over something so trivial it detracts from the situations where outrage is due.

Yup, a thread on its way to deletion, but let me add my own two cents here:

It was hardly three words. He's a racist fuckwad, and he has been since forever. He has a huge and disgusting history of racist slurs. He called the Williams sisters animals. He said that Senator Clinton would be getting cornrows and gold teeth so she could court the black vote. He told 60 minutes that he hired someone on his show specifically to and I quote here "do nigger jokes".

He's a racist fuckwad and I'm glad he's fired. The existence of other racist fuckwads, does not excuse his racism.

Anyone who brings free speech into this is either stupid, or trying to blur the issue. The government didn't silence him, in fact, no one silenced him. He can say all the racist fuckwad crap he wants to, he just doesn't have a multimillion radio contract to say it anymore. Boo fuckin' hoo.

Whine, Whine, Whine. If he didn't want to be treated like crap, he shouldn't have treated people like crap.

And while Rappers rap about "bitches 'n' hoes" they're generally not talking about specific people. What Imus did was insult specific group of teenage/early 20s girls for no reason other then their race and appearance.
posted by delmoi at 3:35 PM on April 12, 2007

Okay I'll bite.

I haven't heard what he actually said, but from all accounts it just sounds so random. I'm glad that, at the very least, the outrage forced the news to show who these women really are.

I don't like what rappers say either, but has there really been a song about the Rutgers women's basketball team?

Imus talks for a living. His talking got him in trouble. You live by the sword you die by the sword I guess.

what sotonohito said.

THe guy was an ass living on borrowed time. This outburst was simply the catalyst which lead to many prominant people and companies saying they no longer desired to be associated with him, so he was no longer profitable for CBS/MSNBC. That's all there is to the story.

Glad to see him gone
posted by slapshot57 at 3:36 PM on April 12, 2007

Just, well, because -

Look, when a rapper says "bitch" or "ho", he's usually using it in a generic way. Like, "Look at all these bitches up in here."

I've heard several people make this comparison with rap and it's not the same thing.

LL Cool J isn't like, "The girls who play for Rutgers are a bunch of whores." He uses the terms, which, I agree, are offensive, in a much more vague way - there's not like.. a.. it's.. English.. stuff..

I think that Al Sharpton oughta take a look in his own backyard first.

Al Sharpton complaigns about rap music all the time. He's even tried to ban it. Anyone calling out Sharpton for not criticizing rap music is simply misinformed.

Anyway, I'm for free speech. If people want to spew racist garbage on the radio, I think they should be able too, but Major corporations are not going to want to be associated with that kind of thing. It wasn't sharpton that brought the guy down. I know in MSNBC's case it was mostly from women (of all races) who worked at the company

sotonohito - lighten up. Have you never heard a comedian perform before? Have you never gone to see a racy, edgy comic? No? That would explain why you have no perspective and get offended so easily.

See, it's called comedy. Some call it funny, others call it crap. Have you not listened to Carlos Mencia or Dave Chappelle? Making fun of black and white with similar comments? No? Try watching or listening. If you're offended, turn the dial.

The irony here is that I find Imus neither entertaining nor relevant, much like the rest of the country. His contemporaires, Opie and Anthony and Howard Stern, often make similar remarks - often much worse. They mock people with disabilities (Wendy the Retard, anyone?) and interview their "token Black guys" often.

Why any of this has made front page news is beyond me. But then again, what would Al Sharpton do if he weren't able to focus his energies on irrelevant radio hosts and their lackluster, sophomoric humor. Yes Al, that's helping the community greatly.

Imus was regularly interviewing senators His show wasn't on MSNBC because it was shock-jock fare. The reason he was fired was because he became too offensive for his demographic

There's a huge difference between Chappelle and Mencia, btw. For one thing, Chappelle was actually funny.

Did I break a rule?

A good post to MetaFilter is something that meets the following criteria: most people haven't seen it before, there is something interesting about the content on the page, and it might warrant discussion from others.

like here, for instance.

Also:
Why was my MetaFilter post deleted?
When a thread is deleted, it is closed to new comments and is removed from the front page but can still be visible at the permanent URL for the thread. There is a brief "reason for deletion" given when a MetaFilter thread is removed. The most common reasons are
...
- axegrindfilter - you posted on a hot-button topic that you frequently post about and/
or used heavy-handed editorializing language.

tgrundke Sorry you racist prick, but saying "nigger nigger nigger nigger, ha ha ha, aren't I funny" doesn't make you any less of a racist prick, or make your racist prick comments any less racist.

Obviously a lot of people agree, and a lot of advertisers pulled their ads which is why Don "I'm a racist fuckwad" Imus finally got his well deserved and *long* overdue fireing.

Again, no one silenced him, he's free to say whatever he wants to; he just doesn't have a radio station broadcasting him any more. I'm sure that he'll be a big hit at Klan rallies and other similar events attended by other completely not racist at all despite all the nigger jokes people.

As for Sharpton, BFD. This isn't about Sharpton, its about Imus. I know its a hard thing to grasp but just repeat this mantra: Racism, or assholery, or anything else, on the part of anyone does not excuse Imus from being a racist fuckwad.

Non-racists don't say shit like he said all the time. Remember, it isn't just the casual and pointless insult to the Rutger's basketball team, its his entire racist history. You have to have your head in a certain place for stuff like that to be funny, and we call that place "racist". If you thought it was funny, well you're a racist too. Once you get over your racism you'll discover, surprise, that racist "jokes" aren't funny, or jokes, they're just an attempt to mask racist remarks.
posted by sotonohito at 3:52 PM on April 12, 2007

I would just like to point out that there is a big difference between censorship and consequence. Imus had every right to say what he did. Those repulsed had every right to call for his removal. Those financially effected had every right to pretend to care and fire him. shockingbluamp had every right to post this. Those who don't like to see FPPs used as crude one link newsfilter excuses to editorialize have every right to point out the misuse. The mods have every right to delete it before I can even finish typing this comment. Consequences. The freedom to get fucked by your own cock-up.

They should look to their own community and begin cleaning up shop there, first.

tgrundke:

You might be interested in this column I happened upon. I'm not necessarily a huge fan of Sharpton et al., but you can't say that Sharpton and Jackson don't criticize their own community. From the link:

In March 2005, Sharpton called for a 90-day television and radio ban for performers who resort to violence to settle scores or promote albums.

In February 2004, Jackson and Sharpton called for a boycott of Barbershop because of the language, depiction of African-American and jokes about Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr.

In January 2006, Sharpton called for an apology from "the cartoonist Aaron McGruder and Cartoon Network for an episode about the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. broadcast last week on The Boondocks, depicting the civil rights leader using the word 'niggers.'

In April 1992, "prominent blacks, including the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the Rev. Al Sharpton and Dr. Alvin Poussaint, the Harvard psychiatrist, have publicly chastised other members of their race for failing to live up to the moral standards of earlier generations of black Americans."

On preview, I also agree with sotonohito that this shouldn't even be about Sharpton or Jackson. This is about Imus being a dumbass.
