Ani - Ghost City of Armenia

Virtual Ani "What is Ani? There are, of course, things we cannot describe however hard we try" wrote Konstantin Paustovsky after visiting Ani in 1923. A thousand years ago Ani was the capital of an Armenian kingdom that covered much of present day Armenia and eastern Turkey. Ani is now a ghost city, uninhabited for over three centuries and marooned inside a Turkish military zone on Turkey's border with modern Armenia. Virtual Ani is a website devoted to the ruined city. The site is so deep it beggars belief. There's a clickable citymap, a history section, a collection of traveler's accounts going back to 1255 and such ephemera as paintings, postcards and stereophotos. And more, so much much more. Wow, the Cathedral is very cool. I'd love to explore around the insides of that place.

This is indeed a wonderful site. The most important section is the one dealing with the restoration, the biggest threat to the city yet. Sorry to say though that this is a double.

There is nothing quite so perfectly and profoundly poetic as a deserted city.
