It doesn't get good till about the midway point, where things take a really strange turn. (Because you know, outing yourself as a man pretending to be a lesbian isn't that interesting in the grand scheme of forum posts.)

so...we have someone pretending to be someone on the internet, and people don't like how he's pretending to be someone in a game where everyone pretends to be someone...and they talk about it, and someone on the internet finds it interesting that they are talking about it so he repeats the conversation on his blog, and now we find his blog post interesting so we are going to talk about his blog post on metafilter...

Do I understand this correctly?

I'll post this to boing boing in a moment...we have a responsibility to keep this going!

somehow, all i can think of saying is "get a life", but, that seems to be the root of the problem...

but, really, get a life....

Make love, not Warcraft.

Jennifer Aniston is his favorite actress? That really is a bizarre twist.

Do I understand this correctly?

You don't seem to, no. I don't think you read the whole post, but if it was so boring you felt compelled to comment here instead, that's understandable.

This seems like as good a time as any to announce that I am actually a rhinoceros.

Step 1: Turn off computer.
Step 2: Open door.
Step 3: Go somewhere besides McDonald's, Starbucks or GameStop.
Step 4: Do not return home until perspective has been discovered.

Events like this are really much more common than the WOW forums would lead you to believe. The majority of "outings" happen and are resolved behind the shroud of "guild affairs." Males playing female characters are ostracized and usually leave the guild and server. Females playing male characters get more attention for doing something "cool." In parallel with real life, relationships (even marriages) are made, broken, and misunderstood. And like everything else in an unending MMO, time moves on.

While I enjoy train-wrecks as much as the next person, I'm not sure this is FPP material, either.

I'm a hetero guy who's been playing female characters online since Blizzard was called "Silicon & Synapse." I don't think there's any new "ha-ha, you're a freak!" ground to be broken. The mere presence of it as a factor makes me not even want to bother reading it.

(For anyone wondering how/why a man could/would roleplay a female, I'd also like to know how/why any human could/would roleplay a 600-year-old elf who can blow shit up with his mind.)

"We don't approve of people pretending to be things they aren't around here. If you're going to act like a Troll Shaman, you'd better be a Troll Shaman in real life, or you're out of the guild!"

No, seriously. This is crap. It's not even good enough for a Digg submission.

This proves that the "OMG CRAZEEE" MMO drama will never ever reach the heights of the MU* player drama of olde.

Which is sad.

I thought it captured all the archetypes for WoW forum drama nicely, hence linking to it here. The guy's "girlfriend" is some girl he's stalking. The photos for his MySpace page are some random girls who he thought looked happy. And he's a lame mage to boot.

I am so easily entertained. It's a curse really.

We've been having this same conversation of IRC since time began. Welcome to the internet, kids!
