Judge, Judy, and Executioner. In this ten-minute segment, legal harridan Judge Judy Sheindlin tears an internet scammer a new one, questioning her ethics, morality, parenting skills, and intelligence.

'Judge Judy' is a "money machine":
"Reports have pegged Paramount's annual profit on Sheindlin's show at $40 million to $50 million from license fees and barter ad revenue....With 260 episodes per year primarily double-run in early fringe, the time period leading up to local evening newscasts, Judy generates costs per thousand viewers (CPMs) twice those typical of daytime....Sheindlin's salary undoubtedly has impacted profits, having multiplied from roughly $500,000-$800,000 per year, standard for other TV judges, to a reported $30 million-$35 million in a new two-year deal starting in 2006—a $5 million yearly hike from her previous contract. It was all over when the defendant rolled into the courtroom wearing horizontal convict stripes. With that level of lack of self-awareness, she would have lost even if she were innocent.

So the plaintiff actually won on a technicality, i.e. the sheet of paper didn't weigh as specified in the ad? That's pretty amazing in some twisted kind of way.

That's not a technicality at all. It shows that the defendant was deliberately seeking to mislead, and therefore was attempting to defraud the victims.

I consider Judge Judy's television persona to be akin to that which Gordon Ramsay portrays on Hell's Kitchen (as opposed to the somewhat gentler one he displays on the F-Word): manufactured outrage. It's all part of their "acts."

Can I just say how much I love Judge Greg Mathis? His entire approach to justice is to try and catch you in a lie. The moment he thinks he's caught you, your case is over. Evidence -- feh. Due process -- feh. The actual law -- feh. Mathis punishes liars. I also like his baliff, who functions to giggle helplessly at Mathis's jokes.
Also a fan of Joe Brown. His courtroom is chaos, and Brown always seems half asleep for it. It's pure theater! People throw every mean spirited libel they can think of at each other, and Joe Brown just raises an eyebrow and purses his lips. I think whenever they cut away from him it is so that a production intern can nudge him awake again.
Judge Judy? She's barely about the law either. You want cases settled by what the law says, tune in to Marilyn Milian on the People Court or Judge Alex. They actually tell you what the law says, sometimes in Spanish! But Judge Judy exists for one purpose, and one purpose only: To hear a foul-tempered old woman give hell to idiots. It's all she does, and she does it well.

"The law" has nothing to do with these shows, because they're not real courts; they're just a form of arbitration. The parties have signed contracts agreeing to abide by the "Judge's" decision which is how they're able to be so crazy and ignore normal court procedure and law. You could start a "Judge Astro Zombie" show if you got people to sign agreements saying they'd follow your decisions in their cases.

Ugh. I can't watch Judge Maria Lopez. Her voice reminds me of my Jewish grandmother hacking after accidentally inhaling a cigarette butt. And Christina's Court makes me want to throw things at my teevee screen. Texas Justice? It's like a judge show starring Champ Kind from Anchorman.

Well, here's the bit from Wikipedia on the legality nature of Judy Judy-type shows. IANAL, but since it's a form of arbitration in which you contractually agree to abide by the decision, I imagine there are penalties laid out in the contract that are legally enforcable, or perhaps you could be sued for breach.
