I want to become the seventh person.

Somewhat related: King of Kong, a documentary about two people battling to be the best at Donkey Kong.

Wait. In fact, it's very related.

Whoa!

How many quarters does that take?

the winning game would only take one quarter.

Not only does it take one quarter, it takes one man.... if you die even once, the perfect score is unattainable.

There's been quite a run of documentaries about competitive video gaming lately. If you get the chance, be sure to check out Chasing Ghosts and High Score, as well as King of Kong.

Chasing Ghosts is especially interesting, as it takes a much more sympathetic view of Billy Mitchell.

I've got a fever and there's only one cure... more cowbell pac-man!

A great piece in Oxford American about Billy Mitchell

I don't understand...in those videos when the player eats the power-ups, the ghosts don't turn blue and can't be eaten. Am I missing something here, or is competitive Pac-Man different from regular Pac-Man?

My understanding is that at the higher levels, the ghosts only turn blue for a fraction of a second before returning to normal

Rarely do I so wish for a time machine. Work on this. Jump back in time. Play pac-man when it first comes out in front of all kindsa folks, mebbe the game designers. Get a perfect score. Walk off saying “yeah, it’s pretty easy, really”

My husband used to rule the world when it came to Donkey Kong and (does anyone else remember this classic?) Mr. Do. Of course, he wasn't Billy, but he was good. One of the saddest rites of parenthood, the one no one ever talks about, is the day a Dad is beaten by his son at his favorite game.

I need to go out and get the King of Kong documentary when it's available on DVD.

Thanks for the blast-from-the-past thread and links!

The Oxford American article has a phrase I cannot parse:

So if you get a perfect score, does a car pull up and the driver say "Greetings, eater! You have been recruited by the Dot League to defend the maze against Blinky and the Four-Ghost Armada."?
