San Fransisco earthquake (minor) Anyone feel it? I'm too far away for this one.
posted by TeatimeGrommit (70 comments total)

This post was deleted for the following reason: Once again, a small/moderate quake in CA that didn't cause any particular ruckus isn't FPP material. If something big happens, post about it then. -- cortex

Looks like it's really more of a moderate earthquake in nearby San Jose. Hope no one was hurt!

Yep--was at dinner, suddenly thought I was spontaneously drunk (having only diet soda with my meal, that was puzzling). It was fairly strong, but I live east of the epicenter, in the Central Valley (quake was somewhere under the coastal range east of Milpitas, according to the USGS). My brother, who lives in SF, didn't notice it.

I'm in the second story of a townhouse in Fremont, and I felt it quite a bit. It was a little scary at first because I didn't know whether the roof would cave in or how long it would last, but once it was over it didn't seem like such a big deal any more. A few things fell off the shelves, no big deal.

Third floor of a three-storey flat, in the Mission near SF General. I heard it before I felt it - the first jolt rattled things (nothing fell), and the second made the house twitch like it'd been kicked. Altogether, it lasted 3-4 seconds.

Here's the ZIP code-based "did you feel it" map.

26 minutes later there was a 7.2 magnitude quake north of the Marianas Islands. That sounds more exciting.

Wonder if they felt it in Saipan.

There have been 20 5.0+ earthquakes in the last week; they really aren't that noteworthy.

Just moved to San Jose about four weeks ago, so a pretty new experience for me! Biggest earthquake we ever had in Ireland was I believe a 4 point something back in '84. It's now on the front page of CNN btw.

Felt it, and I was 60 miles away. Don't know that it's necessarily FPP material, but on the other hand it is the biggest earthquake to hit the Calaveras Fault since 1986 -- which is newsworthy.

I've never felt an earthquake, though this was the second one since having moved to the city early this summer.

I saw a map at the San Andreas fault vistor's center that showed my street as being on some of the most solid bedrock around (I'm just west of Dolores Park).

I guess I'll have to wait until one hits while I'm at work over in Oakland.

Watching and having a polite drinky-poo one night in a Northen Uni bar, a large rugby chap suddenly, and loudly tells his tablefull of fellow drinkers:

"If you put a tenner on the table, I'll go and shite in a pint, come back and drink it!"

After a lot of "he'll never's" and "he won'ts", the fellow drinkers clubbed in a tenner. As I was drunk and curious, I chipped in a quid - after all, you know you'd pay to see this...

The chap then disappears to the toilets, and returns with a large brown mound in his pint glass, which, after a little crowd teasing, he takes a manly swig from.

I'm not ashamed to say I nearly barfed, as did everyone else. He then, majestically, sweeps the money off the table, pockets it, and says: "It were only a Mars Bar, you twats!".

I didn't begrudge him the pound, the whole performance was sheer showmanship.

Scheisse. Let's see if I can get this in before the thread gets deleted (rightfully so). Report from my parents in lower East Bay is that it was strong-ish and lasted a long time. My mom dove underneath the table. But yeah, 5.6 is strong if you're near but usually doesn't do any damage anywhere, even the epicenter, unless you're talking a poorly constructed town in the developing world.

I'm sure this will be gone shortly, but may I just say that this native San Franciscan really doesn't mind people calling my hometown San Fran, or even 'Frisco, but freakin' hates it when anything outside of the city line is called San Francisco.

Milpitas ain't the City.
San Jose ain't the City.
The whole area is chock full of unique and memorable names...use them!

Oh...but not on a post like this. Maybe this qualifies as an AskMefi query? Meta Talk?

I'm in SF proper, didn't feel any shaking but housemates did.

I did, however, get an SMS from USGS.GOV 'cause the quake broke the 5.5 threshold I have programmed for alerts in the area, which made me do...

...little more than step quickly beneath a bridge on my way to the corner store, and fill up all of my water jugs when I got home. I think I glanced at my fire extinguisher and first aid kit just to check on where they were.

See, if there's a nice, moderate quake, I just hope I get the SMS alert from USGS fast enough so I can go outside and surf the damn thing. I've been through nearly half a dozen nice-sized quakes, but I've always been indoors. I think I'd enjoy seeing the ground ripple, as long as stuff isn't falling on me and I'm not being hurled bodily in the air by a 9.x monsterquake.

SF/Bay Area is long overdue for a big one. Check your supplies, kids!

No, seriously. Live in the Bay Area? Fill water containers, charge your phone and other batteries and make sure you have some food and water and whatnot. The probability for a large quake in the very near future just increased an order of magnitude or three for the next few weeks.

As a lifelong resident of California & Tokyo, this was exactly an middling-sized quake (as felt in Sunnyvale) in my experience. Not mild, not severe.

Didn't have that fore-running vertical jolt component that tells you heavy shaking is coming (and soon!) but it was large enough for me to worry that my unsecured bookcases might have fallen over.

I was sitting on a couch on the top floor of a six story office building in the Financial District. When the shaking stopped, I announced to the office, "4.5 to 5, closer to 5, far away, not Oakland or Berkeley." But I'll check the final report tomorrow morning—sometimes the magnitude gets adjusted.

My accuracy is improving, but the USGS is pretty damn good at this game. I need more datapoints, damn it.

Downtown San Jose it was pretty fun--enough to worry that the bookcases might fall on us. But really, no damage, a few things fell over on shelves, that was about it.

I like the post. So there. Quakes fascinate me. Only experienced one that was big enough to have a name (Wittier).

Quakes make the cats hide. Mine went missing, found her hiding in a kitchen cupboard! She was stiff with fear, and it had been hours since the quake. Had been calling her, and she did not respond. (I'm talking about Toots, the best cat ever, of course!)

Was in SF for one of these, and it was followed by sirens and commotion outside, so we go out to see what it was and there were a bunch of unrelated incidents going on: burning mattress thrown out the window of a flop house (must have started prior) fist fight over a debt, etc. It was like the population of The Mission sensed something was about to happen, like squirrels or snakes.
