Jack in the Box on Linux It's great to see a true corporation running on something besides Windows.
posted by willlangford (64 comments total)

This post was deleted for the following reason: This is a really thin post (forgive an unkind reference to, say, Slashdot in 1998?); the collapse of objective quality-detection is a big part of why linking to your friends' stuff is generally just not okay on the front page. -- cortex

It's not great to see a FPP that's only a picture of a TV on a restaurant wall. It's also misleading, from this alone, to say that Jack in the Box runs on Linux.

Look at the background, and also the text from the site.

"So my local Jack In The Box has been displaying it’s penguin pride lately. From the other screens I saw flashing by it seems that the tv system is driven by a dual-core Dell running Fedora. From the badge I’d venture to say that its all packaged by RippleTV, good idea taking advantage of open source."

Naughty naughty.

See what happens when you tell us to look more closely at stuff?

Nobody can pull the wool over bigmusic's eyes.

Hrm. Dark grey everywhere. Stripy diagonal backgrounds. Why does this site look so much like this one?

Regardless, this is 50 pounds of suck in a sippy cup. That flat panel display is a marketing device from a third party. It's got jack to do with Jack, really.

Besides, my toaster runs linux. So what?

gomichild: So what does everyone else have planned for the weekend?

Saturday evening I'm celebrating Iceland's Sovereignity Day with a dinner at a fellow Icelander's and then going to a party with a bunch of neuroscientists. Sunday I'll be watching a movie with a friend and then having a few beers with another friend and his buddy from out of town. That's assuming that my flu doesn't make a triumphant comeback.

How 'bout you, gomichild?

gomichild:

Well, Saturday is coming to a close. Was at work from 9am to 6.30pm. Tonight will be spent IRCing and seeing what's on TV. Sunday I have a date with my personal trainer in the morning, and I have to go into work for an hour or so. The remainder of the day should be spent catching up on domestic chores and admin, but I predict there is a good chance I'll just be bumming around on the internet instead.

I ran Linux once. Got a queasy feeling, like I'd eaten a free burger from Jack in the Box. I think Jung would call this synchronicity, or perhaps a bad case of gas.

They're not the first by any stretch of the imagination. Not even the same decade.

(I'd name names, but as the names I'd name are my customers, the ones that have consented to be reference customers are obviously already named in my company's annual reports. I suppose that's not full disclosure, but it's probably close enough...)
posted by atbash at 1:01 AM on December 1, 2007

Well Kattullus sounds like you have a jam packed weekend! Do make sure to wrap up warmly though.

I'm just making some websites and doing some domestic chores - nothing too exciting.

Like goshling it's already Saturday evening here, and us pregnant ladies don't get to paint the town red anymore (for a while at least).

What? So...because one franchise owner runs Linux on at least one computer, the entire company runs on Linux? Christ, your post and your logic sucks.

That being said, man, I can't wait to move to Texas so I can eat Jack in the Box on a regular basis.

Shwaaaaa.... found out by the Metafilter policeeee. How did you do that, bigmusic? What was your intuition? How did you find the connection between willlangford and his friend's blog? That is, his friends blog is apparently the one in the FPP?

Gooogle caaaacheeed. Watt-ching!

Dude bigmusic knows a dodgy link just from the smell of the html.

You gotta watch him at work one of these days. Magic. The way that nose quivers over the screen, scanning for things that are a bit off.

Best nose online that bigmusic.

posted by Kattullus at 1:25 AM on December 1, 2007

I did not know that was possible, Rumple. Well, I mean, not in a concrete sense. I suppose if I thought about it long enough that I could come to the conclusion that a man could gain breasts large enough to hang that low and feel that one of them needs to be pierced. Or I could be mistaken. That could be a woman who has grown chest hair like a man.

I'm not sure about the choice of shark tooth necklace.

Indeed, the picture does speak to androcentric appropriation of gynospecific corporealism, problematizing notions of panoptical voyeurism in the post-media global shanty.

Also, I believe that is a bear tooth. Apt, really.

It looks like you guys have angered some hardcore linux folk. You better apologize or he's gonna h@x0r u.

On another note, yes this post was linked to on Metafilter by a friend of mine. I am not particularly familiar with Metafilter or its policies, but please tell me WTF is wrong with that. He thought it was cool and posted it. Does it look like I am grasping at internet fame? I’m using a stock template and have four posts on this blog that has been up for three weeks. I just wanted to post the cool stuff that I and my friends catch on camera. Thanks for raising my blood-pressure and have a nice day. BTW, IT’S A JOKE.

1) This raised someone's blood pressure?

2) We need to have a sit-down about what is "cool stuff" and what isn't.

3) Unicorn porn.
posted by Roman Graves at 2:16 AM on December 1, 2007

Hmmm. It is unfortunate that we've upset the friend. I rather think that the ridicule here is directed at the violation of the guidelines rather than the content of the post itself. Well, except that the content is fairly weak for a FPP. But as a newly opened photoblog goes it isn't terrible.

Keep posting cool stuff, dude. It ain't your fault that your friend ignores the posting guidelines of this website.
posted by Mister Cheese at 2:22 AM on December 1, 2007

Post cool stuff to your own blog, that is. Self-linking in a front page post is forbidden on the Metafilter. Or linking to friend's stuff. But bigmusic already said that.

I am the friend, that's my site and my pic.

Mister Cheese: Thanks a lot, that is my exact point, and I've gotten carried away.

Regarding my blood pressure - I'm 170 over 90 now, and I cried a little.

I didn't know 'bout the policy on self linking or linking to friends, that makes total sense, but I didn't post this nor did I ask him to post it. Please lay off me, if you have something to say directly regarding the actual post, write a comment on the page - all you need is an email address and I promise I'll be nice to it.

"BTW, THAT'S NOT A JOKE." - Yeah it is, obviously a burger joint can't run on a computer operating system. I meant it as a joke and I'm sorry if it was too intense for you.

Yes, I did just spend 5 bucks to write this and I feel pretty dumb for doing it.

After getting a phone call waking my ass up in the middle of the night, I might come across off color.

I ran accross this, not after rbwsam posted it but another person sent it to me that he did it. Just because he's my friend doesn't mean I talk to him 24/7/365. I don't even use a fucking RSS reader. Yes I have been on MetaFilter a while, do I go here that often, No. Should I have read the rules more clearer before I realized I linked to rbwsam's site, Yes. Do I feel dumb, Yes.

Anyway, I fucked up yes I did. Sorry. Shit happens. Life goes on. Honestly looking through the comments, not so much the flames but how links to images and shit. I think everyone has fucked up at one point in their life. But this is the internet, it allows all of us to become pricks. Good for you all.

I am the type of person that will be the first to admit I fucked up, not go around making fun of everyone when they do. And in my honest opinion there are a few tactful comments in with the bullshit. But how are all the rest of the comments going to reflect on MetaFilter as a community, not that my post helped, but seriously it looks decently shitty. What about the guy that just showed up here to poke around, see's this and says wow these people are idiots and moves on. Nice way to "promote yourselves." MetaFilter is a community blog, so you all own it and shit happens. Think about people you live around, I know there is someone that messes up from time to time, deal with it. Move on.

Goodnight, and good luck.

Um ok whatevs. We are just killing time amusing ourselves waiting for it to be deleted actually.

A better reaction for you would have been to wait until your morning coffee and then come back and said "Ooops - I messed up! What a goose I am! How embarrassing!" instead of the style you chose.

I'm too shallow to get all this together in Linux.
