Here's what Danny, now 34, is up to: "Lloyd is now an assistant professor of biology at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.[1] He prefers to focus on his current career." ..... "Because of his age (6) and the genre of The Shining (1980), Lloyd was closely guarded by Kubrick during filming and didn't realize it was a horror film until several years later, despite his notoriety and his famous line "Redrum! Redrum!" (Wikipedia)

Wow.

Wow, ml. I wish I had a single childhood memory like that. That's wonderful.

Shouldn't it be "Commentary track from the filmaker, Stanley Kubrick's, daughter Vivian."? Unless Vivian actually made the film?

Justinian, I was referring to the filmmaker of the documentary about The Shining.

I actually wrote him years later to thank him. He made a permanent impact on my life in those 40 minutes and I really wanted him to know. I sent the letter February 1988, and I received a response a few months later from his wife. She said that he'd died in November of 1987 (just missed him!) and that they'd been married for over 50 years. She thanked me for the letter, said she cried when she read it, and included a photo of him that she autographed for me, adding that she wished he was there to sign it for me.

I have the photo and letter hanging in my office. At first I was sorry I didn't write the letter before he died, but then I decided that it probably happened exactly as it was supposed to. I probably gave Scatman a bigger gift by letting his widow know that he made a big difference to people and wasn't going to be forgotten any time soon.

This is the same making of that's on the DVD I have, and I finally decided to watch it two days ago after watching the movie for the umteenth time. So were Duvall's little spells and ill health real, or just attention-seeking devices?

Oops, I can't read. Yay!

This same documentary is included on the DVD I have of The Shining, and I found it immensely interesting and entertaining. So much better than most of these "making of" clips that accompany every movie these days, which are mostly talking heads, offering us endless "Oh, it was so wonderful working with________." And "Oh, ________'s a genius, and so much fun to work with!"... ad nauseum. But this little film is so much fresher, and real. The whole "making of" hadn't yet become a genre.

And wow, was Kubrick rough on Shelley Duvall! She's obviously very emotional, and seemingly a bit insecure, and it looks like Kubrick kind of kept her on edge, probably knowing full well that it would help get that amazing, truly frightened performance out of her.

Also touching how Scatman Cruthers (what a great face that guy had) gets all emotional during his interview. "I'll never forget this."

God, I miss Kubrick. What a giant.
