Who wants to marry a Victorian?

Advice for the Young Bride circa 1894 "To the sensitive young woman who has had the benefits of proper upbringing, the wedding day is, ironically, both the happiest and most terrifying day of her life. On the positive side, there is the wedding itself, in which the bride is the central attraction in a beautiful and inspiring ceremony, symbolizing her triumph in securing a male to provide for all her needs for the rest of her life. On the negative side, there is the wedding night, during which the bride must pay the piper, so to speak, by facing for the first time the terrible experience of sex."

No one has stepped forward as the author yet. Barbara is almost certainly correct, but until there's some proof either way I don't think she can say it's false.

I collect sexual manuals from this era. While they're full of interesting and prudish writing, none of them are as direct as this. Phrasing like "A selfish and sensual husband can easily take advantage of such a bride." rings entirely false.

There isn't a Whole Foods on my side of town. I would unashamedly shop there if I could.

Even if I hadn't known this was fake for several years already, it's pretty glaringly obvious from the text itself. Who, with that opinion of sex in 1894, would have been so forthright in talking about it? "Pay the piper"? "Sex"?

Man, that's the best part. Especially in the hardest part of the cheese, at the rind. Intense little salty flavor explosions are why it costs more.

I made this last week, it was tremendous.

Curried chicken salad

Makes 6 servings.

Ingredients
1 3/4 cups chicken broth
1 1/2 lb skinless boneless chicken breast
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/3 cup plain yogurt
5 teaspoons curry powder
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
1 teaspoon honey
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 medium red onion, chopped (1 cup)
1 firm-ripe mango (3/4 lb), peeled, pitted, and chopped
1 cup red seedless grapes (5 oz), halved
1/2 cup salted roasted cashews, coarsely chopped

Preparation
Bring 4 cups water to a simmer with chicken broth in a 2- to 3-quart saucepan. Add chicken and simmer, uncovered, 6 minutes. Remove pan from heat and cover, then let stand until chicken is cooked through, about 15 minutes. Transfer chicken to a plate and cool 10 minutes. Chop into 1/2-inch pieces.

While chicken is cooling, whisk together mayonnaise, yogurt, curry, lime juice, honey, ginger, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Add chicken, onion, mango, grapes, and cashews and stir gently to combine.

I'm eating organic mac and cheese that comes in a box. I did, however, remove it from the box and cook it first.
Yay me! Domestication.

This is obviously a hoax/satire/whatever, and it's offensive in its ham-fisted delivery of the same old tired "joke". Nelson and stephthegeek are correct- the vernacular is all wrong; the phrasings shift sloppily between stilted faux Victorian and modern casualness. I say put it out of its (our?) misery.

Having recently consumed the Anheuser-Busch 2007 Brewers Reserve recently, I understand completely.

(It was an acceptably dopplebock, but you do need to drink it warmer than normal bock would normally ask. I can't suggest you buy it, but if it's free, it's certainly drinkable.)

I've made this several times lately. It's simple, quick and really tasty.

Zucchini With Garlic, Roasted Red Peppers And Chives
Yields: 4

2 whole red pepper; roasted
4 cloves garlic clove; chopped
4 tbsp chives; chopped
5 whole basil leaf; thinly sliced
2 tbsp olive oil
to taste balsamic vinegar
to taste salt
4 whole zucchini; diced

Mix peppers, garlic, chives, olive oil and basil. Season with dash vinegar and salt to taste (pepper optional). Set aside. Steam zucchini until tender-crisp, about 5 minutes. Drain well. Add the zucchini to the bell pepper mixture and toss well. Serve immediately.
