That first link has got to be the longest official obituary I have ever come across. I don't even think JP2's was that long. Oh, and the comments are very interesting:

How many Mormons does it take to change a light bulb?

Thirty. One to change the bulb, nine to set up chairs, and twenty to bring refreshments to the cultural hall.

Right now the Westboro Baptist Church is fiercely debating how they'll split their resources between his funeral and Heath Ledger's.

Whoa! I don't understand the hate here. I'm not Mormon, and I'm not really interested in the lifes and deaths of current religious figures, but this thread is hostile. Play nice, kids.

As I understand it, the "seer, prophet and revelator" has a bit more power than the Pope. Perhaps centuries of strange papal activity have something to do with this.

In any case, our apostate status in regards to the LDS faith render us non-Mormon MeFites unfit to comment on this change in leadership. Of course, the guy died, but, shit, at 97: we should all live so long! Boycott Starbucks!

The interface between divine revelation and cultural change (read: women; blacks) should give us pause as to the infallibility of the Mormon President as a voice of God, but the Pope has the same secular/religious problem. It just takes a few hundred years instead of a few decades for the Catholics to 'fess up to their mistakes (thinking Copernicus/Galileo here).

Does God care if it takes a hundred years or a thousand years to say that, OK, maybe racism and slavery and torturing scientists is a bad idea?

Sorry, but the Dalai Lama makes more sense to me. If one were to choose a religious leader. Which I don't. He doesn't like homos, for example. But, the last few centuries of religious warfare and peacemaking have been exciting.

Can you beat MLK Jr.and Gandhi? Yeah, raise me a Howard Zinn or a Christopher Hitchens, but still...

Even if you didn't enjoy his work, there's no denying his contribution to religious culture. Truly a Mormon icon.

Play nice, kids.

Why? He was President of the world's largest landlord/tax dodging corporation, a "church" that generates some $7 billion a year in revenue, which is then spends to further ruin the planet. Powerful public figures like that are valid targets for whatever bile they might deserve upon their death.

Huh? Mormon's don't believe that their prophets are infallible, in fact they specifically say that the prophets can make mistakes interpreting the words of god. At least that's my understanding.

Oh well, at least now this guy gets to be the god of his own planet and enjoy his 72 virgins or whatever.

Henri Bergson postulated that laughter is a social sanction against inflexible behaviour. So if we don't laugh at Mormons (I once gave two Mormons some hash brownies at the door... I wonder what happened to them?) then we will be failing natural selection, or evolution, or some science thing or other. Also, cmonkey is right about becoming a god thing on another planet, so we can expect to see him again on Battlestar Galactica at some point.

A friend of mine happens to share a name with a mormon kid out on a mission, and I guess some of his family members have the wrong email account for him and every once in a while he gets emails for him, basically from other mormon missionaries all over the world, South America, Ethiopia, etc. These kids are so idealistic and so SURE that God is with them every step of the way. I'm a cynically, hard-bitten atheist, but it's touching. They're even sunshine-y about Hinkley's passing -- just saying that it's very sad, but they're sure he's happy to be with his wife again.

I dunno. It's hard for me to hate on Mormon's. Hard to be FRIENDS with them since they try to convert you all the time and get you to stop drinking, but it's hard to hate them.
