It's really too bad the war in Iraq is so absolutely necessary and inevitable. $200 billion a year could buy a lot of other stuff. (Single Page Link)

...Freedom: Priceless

Some things money can't buy.
For everything else, there's Haliburton.

Those were the costs last year -- as per the date of your link to the NYT graphic -- January 17, 2007.

As much as many here like to discuss/debate the quagmire in Iraq, this doesn't qualify well for a MetaFilter FPP.

We used to have the walls lined with cash, but...

Well, for some sense of the word "could", sure.

But unfortunately, if the money that we're currently throwing down the drain in Iraq were to suddenly become available for health care, education, medical research, security, et cetera, Republicans would yell at the top of their lungs that we need to give a $50/year tax refund to every American, and in a teeny-tiny whisper mention oh, by the way, it's going to be linked to $185 billion in tax cuts for the wealthy.

Like that money wouldn't have just gone to contracts/tax breaks to the companies that own the government if we didn't need a war to protect their oil interests. Why do you hate killing brown people so much?

Irt is a mistake to try to suggest what war money could be spent on. We have a system and people running things who choose NOT to spend for domestic needs--and they call lots of such things Socialism. If all the money thus far spent on Iraq were not spent (no war) do you think we would instead have health coverage for all etc etc?
