Nature, Britain's popular science journal reports 1 in 5 scientists are using "cognitive enhancers" such as Ritalin, Modafanil, and Beta Blockers. There are a lot of questions about their safety and some discussion about the ethical implications of their use. Some workers are wondering if they need to start using these drugs to keep up with their "cognitively enhanced" co-workers. This brings the whole performance enhancing in sports and "sports" home.

I am well aware there has already been a Mefi on one of these articles but I wanted to show that the use of nootropics and other cognitive enhancers have implications not just in science, but in sports, popular "culture", and academia.

This post was deleted for the following reason: this is a good collection of links but it's the subject of a post still being discussed on the front page and probably needs to go there -- jessamyn
