Is Michelle Obama sinking Barack's campaign?
"Even if he pulls off a mathematical nomination victory, he has completely lost the first, fine, careless rapture of a post-racial and post-resentment political movement and mired us again in all the old rubbish that predates Dr. King. What a sad thing to behold. And how come?"

"I direct your attention to Mrs. Obama's 1985 thesis at Princeton University. Its title is "Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community." At quite an early stage in the text, Michelle Obama announces that she's much influenced by the definition of black "separationism" offered by Stokely Carmichael and Charles Hamilton in their 1967 screed Black Power: The Politics of Liberation in America."

An unoriginal, spittle-flecked screed by a drunken English troll does not a good FPP make.

Yes, this is exactly why I won't be voting for Barack.

This is a pretty obscure ObamaFilter story. I'm not saying it's a bad post; but I don't think it's a good post for MetaFilter.

This doesn't make any sense. Stokely Carmichael and Charles Hamilton post-date King and his formative years by a distance.

Why is what someone wrote in 1985 critical to understanding their positions now? I used to write "S/D" for Social Democracy on my notebooks in high school back then. Does that mean I'm for nationalizing heavy industry back then? No.

Aside from that Slate article, I haven't seen any polling on this or anyone else really mention this--seems like another "reporter tries to create story by fake-guilt-by association" setup. Its not like she's out there screaming for black separatism from the rooftops anyway.

Does the fact that Bill Clinton cheated on his wife mean that Hillary wants to destroy marriage? No.

Analysis like this is what's killing America.

he has completely lost the first, fine, careless rapture

That was never, ever going to last. He knows it. Yes, the messiah isn't coming. Just a regular person who wants to lead.
