Moments in American History, in a HEPA Filter

Two, Two, TWO disasters for the price of ONE... "Those filters filled to capacity last week (Bionaire people? You reading? Seven years, 911 AND Katrina? Good product, guys!), and begged me (in choked, dusty voices) to change them out, leaving me with several crud-packed plastic cartriges of joy, filled with whatever was floating in the air through two of our nation's greatest disasters. And, I'll bet there's some scientist or museum or conspiracist who could use them to run tests or decorate Christmas trees or sue the bejeebus out of the Federal Government or something."

This post was deleted for the following reason: uh, posting your pal's ebay auction is kind of a bad idea -- mathowie

Already outbid twice.
And the postage and handling is a killer.

I only wish that the dust had taken the form of the Virgin Mary, but no such luck.

I LIKE this dude.

Oh boy, I lived 3 miles away from the WTC and never took the government up on the free air filters or vacuum cleaners. I guess that's why I get nasty allergies every spring now when I never had them before 2001.

Somebody warn me if this guy moves to Tennessee.

Pretty hilarious auction. Thanks for the post.

Heh, I saw that yesterday on the New Orleans LiveJournal community. I never in a million years thought it would end up here in the blue.

(BTW, this guy is a woman. She's an artist that sells her wares down in Jackson Square.)

Silicosis from not changing his air filter for 7 years, clearly.

That would make one heck of an exhibit in the soon to be GWB Presidential Library

And how exactly is anyone supposed to separate everything caught by the filter into neatly labeled 9/11 and Katrina boxes?

I like this guy too. Unfortunately, I doubt that $27.78 is going to help with his debt.

Except that it's litterally $27.78 for her garbage. Just imagine what she can get for something actually useful?

Meh, this is just a viral advertisement for Bionaire. Wake up, people!

... Is it sad that I'm surprised that they actually offered air filters to people living in that choking dust cloud after Sept. 11th? Maybe I am really jaded and cynical, but I really figured FEMA just shrugged and flipped everyone off near the WTC.

but I really figured FEMA just shrugged and flipped everyone off near the WTC.

Actually, it was Christie Todd Whitman and the EPA that just shrugged and flipped everyone off.
posted by R. Mutt at 8:43 AM on June 13, 2008

Whitman appeared twice in New York City after the September 11 attacks to inform New Yorkers that the toxins released by the attacks posed no threat to their health.[17] On September 18 the EPA released a report in which Whitman said, "Given the scope of the tragedy from last week, I am glad to reassure the people of New York and Washington, D.C. that their air is safe to breathe and their water is safe to drink." She also said, "The concentrations are such that they don't pose a health hazard...We're going to make sure everybody is safe."[18] Later, a 2003 report by the EPA's inspector general determined that such assurances were misleading, because the EPA "did not have sufficient data and analyses" to justify the assertions when they were made.[19] A report in July 2003 from the EPA's Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response gave extensive documentation supporting many of the inspector general's conclusions, and carried some of them still further.[20] Further, the report found that the White House had "convinced EPA to add reassuring statements and delete cautionary ones" by having the National Security Council control EPA communications after the September 11 attacks.[21] Wiki

Someone should buy it and donate it to a research university somewhere (at least part of it); it'd be interesting to know, from an independent source, exactly what's in the 9/11 dust. It's clear that you certainly can't trust anything coming out of FEMA or the EPA.
