Farts in The Arts..... Though seen by some as only an obscure historical footnote and only approaching the fringe of fame and notoriety posthumously, Joseph Pajol or Le Petomane, was one of the great performers of all time.

Over a hundred years ago Le Petoman entertained Parisians at the Moulin Rouge with his uncanny ability to fart a variety of sounds and musical pieces . This amazing fartiste is said to have been able to blow out a candle from a foot away and could even take drags on a cigarette through a flexible tube inserted in his rectum. By holding his breath “he could vacuum air into his ass, then force it back out with as much gusto and modulation as he wished.” There are a few pretenders today trying to duplicate Le Petomane’s magic but none can match his popularity or elan.
From Classical Latin to Cicero, from Aristophanes to Chaucer, from Martin "I can drive away the devil with a single fart" Luther to Ben Franklin, from Howard Stern to Mr. Methane the fart has been heard and celebrated (youtube greatness!)
Even Johnny Depp is said to covet the part of Le Petomane on the big screen. Mr. Pajol’s theme song, “The Wind Beneath Me Sings”, tooted with fartissimo, was popularized many years later in a sanitized version changed to the “Wind Beneath My Wings.”

Goddamnit, I flagged this because I was going to do a post on him, but realized it had been here before. Bastard.

(oh, wait, I didn't flag it. sorry.)

There's also the BART fartist, a different type of artist in his own right.

Thanks for the post...I'd heard about him, but never read a detailed account of his performance. Plus, I like the word "fartiste."
