I haven't read it yet. But... ouch.

I was surprised it was so short. I really enjoyed the Walt Disney bit.

Woo!

I met Kreider at the Small Press Expo four or five years ago and he was classy and awesome. Everyone else there reveled in their scruffiness and he was in a suit.

He never actually tells the story, does he? And yet it's still great.

I have a scar and I don't know where the hell is came from. I tell people I got it rescuing orphans from a grizzly bear. They know it is a lie. In the real world, I would have gotten the scar from feeding orphans to a grizzly bear. Or a brown bear. Or a sloth bear, which I hear are suprisingly deadly, despite thier name. I am not too particular about my bears.

I love the way he draws people and faces. It reminds me of Dave Sim at his best.

I wonder if we'll ever know what happened.

cowbellmoo - I met him as well, at a signing in NYC. Considering the vitriol of his cartoons, the man is the absolute epitome of geniality. I've never met anyone so thankful that I appreciated their work.

SmileyChewtrain - Wow! I never made the connection, but thinking back to Sim's take on Mick Jagger and Keith Richards in Church and State, I totally see it.

As far as the story of what happened, he publishes an "Artist's Statement" with each comic that occasionally veers into matters biographical, so this search string might be able to clear up ... next to absolutely nothing.

I heard that he is actually a little bunny rabbit.

As far as I know from the various artist's statements in The Pain (still one of my favorite comics, but has dropped in quality lately, I'm sad to say), he was vacationing in Greece, got into some sort of drunken argument (he never says what about), and was stabbed in the neck by some crazy Greek dude, apparently a different guy from whoever he pissed off because he never saw the attacker.

Thanks, December. But 'dropped in quality'? I can't claim to have read the comic for as long as some, but Lost Secrets of the Ancient Americans was pretty excellent.

I wonder if a large enough group of orphans could be trained to consistently win fights with the bear?

Yeah, don't get me wrong, it's still funnier than most comics and I still read it every week, but it seems Kreider finally succumbed to outrage fatigue and had his spirit broken sometime earlier this year. His recent stuff is still good, but it's not on the level of older stuff like Science vs. Norse Mythology, Onan The Barbarian, Jesus vs. Jeezus, Negropolis, Operation: Head of State etc. etc. He's admitted this in some of the recent artist's statements, and I'm sure he'll return fully to form soon.

I've heard Jon Bon Jovi tell the tale of getting shot through the heart many times, so I'm ready for another something'd through the something story.

Tim is one of the good ones. Give him money.

I honestly wouldn't try as hard after I've proved myself with something the quality of Onan.
Tim is weary. Leave Tim alone..

Yeah, Tim is one of those that I really have to try hard not to like.

Fuckin' waminals.

Pope Guilty's link is great. Here's a photo of the Aegina harbor church, but in this artist's water color you can also see the hotel behind it, including the corner room with a view of the sea where I suppose Hasford, and later Kreider, stayed.

When I finally realized this, I wanted to stab him in the neck a second time.

Get in line, McDermott.

That was terrific. He doesn't tell the story of how he was stabbed in the neck because it's not a story about getting stabbed in the neck--it's a story about how we tell stories about ourselves. Great link!
